Editorial Reviews

Charles Dickens dramatizes the life story of this 19th-century master of the English novel.

We first see Dickens as a slender, book-obsessed child whose earliest literary influence was his nurse Mary Weller, who had a vast repertoire of stories about ghosts and goblins. Michael Hardwick and Mollie Hardwick’s delightful dramatization allows us to hear Weller, as well as other characters in young Dickens life. Eventually, we see Dickens move to London and write his great novels.

Between narrated summaries of key events in Dickens' life, this fascinating biography also features elaborate, soundscaped performances of novels like The Pickwick Papers and Oliver Twist.

Publisher's Summary

There has never been another novelist like Dickens. In his novels and stories, loved throughout the world, he created a host of fictional characters, reflecting their eccentricities, their wit, their violence, and their pathos. They live today as vividly as ever. This engrossing dramatisation shows how his most famous creations were derived from his own experiences and from facets of his complex, almost demonic personality.
