Selbstlose Verhaltensweisen und egoistische Reaktionen werden analysierend erfaßt, Schicksale entdeckt, aber kein Urteil gefällt. Das Streben des einzelnen nach Glück, nach anhaltender Lebenskraft, seine Suche nach dem sichersten Weg führt zumeist über nervöse Gereiztheit, Resignation und Überschwang zu plötzlichem Ende oder langsamem Sterben. Dabei geht dem äußeren Tod nicht selten ein allmähliches Absterben der inneren Kräfte und Bindungen voraus. Unsicherheit, Selbstberuhigung, aber auch Überdruß spiegeln sich im "monologue interieur" zwischen den Dialogen.
Schnitzlers Figuren sind bereit, ein großes Spiel zu spielen, und, wenn sie es verloren haben, mit ihrem Dasein zu bezahlen. Und zeichnen sie am Ende ihr eigenes Leben auf, stellt sich ihnen die Frage, ob dies A nklage ist oder Verteidigung.
