Fu originariamente composta nel 1913, in una prima ed unica stesura che portava il titolo Il più lungo giorno, che fu consegnata per la pubblicazione a Giovanni Papini e ad Ardengo Soffici; quest'ultimo perse però il manoscritto originale, costringendo Campana a riscrivere l'opera quasi interamente a memoria.
Per lungo tempo l'autografo dell'originale si considerò perduto: venne ritrovato solamente nel 1971, tra le carte di Soffici.
