Publisher's Summary

Corpse candles. Phantom funerals. The bird of death. It was insidious.... For Bethan, the schoolteacher, the old superstitions woven into the social fabric of her West Wales village are primitive and distasteful. Which is why she's pleased to welcome the sophisticated newcomers: London journalist Giles Freeman and his wife, Claire. Surely they'll let in some fresh air.

But the Freemans are keen to absorb this different culture, a whole new way of life - rejecting the advice of an old colleague who warns them of a hard and bitter land where they've always danced on the edge of the abyss. They soon learn that this community hides an ancient, bloody, and pagan secret - one that will haunt them forever....

Beautifully atmospheric, subtle horror

Loved this book and discovering this author has been a real treat. Terrific performance by Siriol Jenkins. A chilling tale and it actually kept me reading all night which hasn't happened in a while. Almost guaranteed to give a few chills. Love this book!!!

narrator spoils the fun.

The narration was very distracting. The male voices were awful. The male American accent was tortured and exaggerated.
Having listened to all but a couple of Rickman's stories I stayed with it but wished with every syllable I was hearing someone else.
A very unpleasant experience with an otherwise decent story.

Well worth a listen.

I like this author and this is one of his better books, but what makes the book so interesting to listen to is the narrator. Excellent narration! Full marks! She was fantastic!

Brilliant Rickman.

I've loved Phil Rickman books for years, primarily the utterly addictive merrily Watkins series but lately I've been listening to his other works. I have found them to be beautifully detailed and each has an ability to draw you in slowly until your engrossed totally. I love his characters and the settings he lays out for us. I can't express enough how much enjoyment I find from his writings.

classic phil rickman

Where does Candlenight rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Phil Rickman is always high on my list of authors

What did you like best about this story?

The readers of rickman's books are all excellent and Siriol Jenkins was particularly good. I understand this is one of the first of his books and it did not disappoint.

Which character – as performed by Siriol Jenkins – was your favourite?

No particular favourite. He has the same skill as Stephen King-he brings characters alive
with a few spare strokes.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Atmospheric and scarey.

A brilliant debut

Phil Rickman's most famous for his Merrily Watkins series of mystery/occult novels (recently televised) but this was his first book - a chilling tale set in mid-Wales. Giles Freeman and his wife Clare inherit a cottage in the picturesque and remote village of Y Groes, and imagine it will be their perfect escape from London. But is there something sinister going on in Y Groes? Or is it just part of a reaction to English "incomers" pricing local people out of the housing market? The tale twists and turns as it combines mythology with politics - and does so in Rickman's characteristically atmospheric way. Set in the early winter, it's perfect for those who like Christmas ghost stories, and is brilliantly read by Siriol Jenkins who manages to capture and create the atmosphere and characters

Not his best.

Not Mr. Rickman’s best book. Good ending with a good pace to the climax. The first half to two thirds of this book dragged. Most unusually with a Phil Rickman, I very nearly gave up.

First book I've read by this author and was not disappointed.

Enjoyable listen and well narrated. I didn't become bored and wanted to carry on listening.
