Publisher's Summary

"Candide" is a delightful story filled with boundless misadventure while tackling the great philosophical issues of the Enlightenment era. The story is about Candide, a young man who is the illegitimate nephew of a German baron with whom he resides. When it is discovered he is kissing the baron's beautiful daughter he is thrown from the castle where he experiences the horrors of war, poverty, the maliciousness of man, and the hypocrisy of the church.

Obviously, Voltaire is poking fun at Leibniz, Pope, and others who assail that the world created by God was the best possible of all worlds with perfect order and reason, as spoken through the greatest of all fictional philosophers, Candide's tutor, Pangloss. As you listen to segments of "Candide", take the time to research both the book and Voltaire to gain a richer understanding of the themes interlaced throughout the audiobook.

Classic masterpiece, awful narration

Loved the story but struggled to finish. The narration was unbearable. I suggest getting a different version of this audiobook.

Exceptionally satirical story - very flawed reading, unfortunately

The story itself is fabulously satirical and really knocks both philosophy and everything else under the sun. And it’s an important part of literary history.

But the many pronunciation errors by the reader - including so many that really shouldn’t have been an issue - were distracting and took away from the overall enjoyment of the book.

I’d recommend it, but not by this reader. He has a good “voice over” style voice, but the lack of adequate practice shows.

Very monotone reader

The reader is very monotone. He needs to get into character. It is a very hard book to listen to.

Terrible Reading

Michael Scott reads like a robot that has not done any research on how to pronounce Latin, French, German or Portuguese. A rough butchery of the text.

Illustrates the period and Voltaire's wit

This book is beautifully read. Voltaire's trenchant story is full of wit and delicate irony. It was very helpful in understanding Voltaire's point of view, having read before the Black Death. Dorsey Armstrong and Voltaire by Prof Kerr, both courses offered by Audible. I wish I had read this book before.

Fun satirical story, many philosophical references

The Narrator Michael Scott mispronounced nouns with common Romantic & Latin origins.
I was embarrassed for him & his Editor.

Otherwise, Candide is fun and educational!

Solid book

It's not read particularly well and is from an old style that isn't fun to follow, but the story is pretty cool.

probably worth the 78p

This classic is worth the listen, its very funny and in the context of exploring the different philosophies of the enlightenment period, its very interesting. The characters are written in a very superficial way, but I think this is deliberate as it enhances the irony and the farcical feel of this satirical piece.
The reader however, as many other reviewers have said, sounds like a robot. Many words are mispronounced (not just pronounced in an American way, but read wrong, as in the reader doesn't know or understand the words he's reading) and the delivery is wooden in the extreme.
However, for 78p its alright, if you don't mind listening to a sat nav reading the classics.
