Publisher's Summary

Here is a provocative look at the remarkable contributions of high-skill immigrant entrepreneurs in America. Both a revelation and a call-to-action, Immigrant, Inc. explores the uncommon skill and drive of America's new immigrants and their knack for innovation and entrepreneurship. From the techies who created icons of the new economy - Intel, Google, eBay and Sun Microsystems - to the young engineers tinkering with solar power and next-generation car batteries, immigrants have proven themselves to be America's competitive advantage.

With a focus on legal immigrants and their odyssey from homeland to start-up, this unique book:

  • Explores the psyche, cultural nuances, skills, and business strategies that help immigrants achieve remarkable success
  • Explains how immigrants will create the American jobs of the future - if we let them

Whether you are a CEO, a civic leader, or an entrepreneur yourself, Immigrant, Inc. warns of the peril of anti-immigrant attitudes and a hostile immigration process. It also explains how any American can tap their "inner immigrant" to transform their lives and their companies.

Written by an immigration lawyer who represents immigrant entrepreneurs and a journalist who specializes in international culture, the authors have a front-row seat to this phenomenon, offering a fascinating glimpse into the mindset of the most persistent entrepreneurs of the era.

      "Over-dry presentation of immigrant entrepreneurs"
Is there anything you would change about this book?

I would definitely provide more rousing portraits of immigrants, their families, places of birth, adaptation to destination communities, etc.

What could R. T. Herman and Robert L. Smith have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Since much of the value of the work is in statistics, an accompanying pdf would be useful.

How could the performance have been better?

While it did match the dense, dry the tone of the writing, I still would have liked it to be livelier!

Did Immigrant, Inc. inspire you to do anything?

Explore other works offering more human interest, and a more consolidated view of immigrant entrepreneurs' overall impact.

      "Interesting bunch of mini biographies"
Where does Immigrant, Inc. rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Around the middle. I was expecting more of an analysis of immigrants' techniques for starting businesses and not as many anectdotal examples. I was hoping for a different spin on entrepreneurism but this wasn't that so I got a little bored towards the end.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Nope. I listened to it commuting and got to the stage where I was waiting for it to end. Dennis Holland read well, it was the content that got a little dry.

      Any additional comments?

This isn't a book for people wanting to learn techniques for starting businesses or wanting tips from other people who've done it. I've listened to better books on starting a business.
