Publisher's Summary

The 10th book in the Sunday Times best-selling Inspector McLean series, from one of Scotland's most celebrated crime writers.

When a member of the Police Scotland team fails to clock in for work, concern for her whereabouts is immediate...and the discovery of her burnt-out car in remote woodland to the south of Edinburgh sets off a desperate search for the missing woman.

Meanwhile, DCI Tony McLean and the team are preparing for a major anti-corruption operation - one which may raise the ire of more than a few powerful people in the city. Is Anya Renfrew's disappearance a coincidence or related to the case?

McLean's investigations suggest that perhaps that Anya isn't the first woman to have mysteriously vanished in these ancient hills. Once again, McLean can't shake the feeling that there is a far greater evil at work here....

Scottish mystery gold

Tony and his colleagues are a team of wonderful grumpy characters. The storyline went down quite a few rabbit holes and was worth it. The narrator brought to life the characters and is easy to listen to. Far better than some others. Definitely worth a listen

A steady favourite

Great story, good change from the last couple of themes although still within the dark depths of weird and scary. I am a fan for the long term, please keep them coming!

Absolute edge of seat story

Omg, this had me on edge for most of the book. James Oswald is fabulous, he weaves a fantastic take that drags you in kicking and screaming and spits you out the other end spent, full of unease and wanting more, more, more. Ian Hanmore is just amazing, I could listen to him reading any book at all, but his narration of all of James Oswald's books, and in particular this one, make me believe these characters are real. I will look forward to the next installment of McLean and co with much anticipation. I did miss Madame Rose though.

Bit Indiana Jones, this one!

Enjoyed the pace and action but was very fanciful. Fully embracing and investing in the plot and procedural elements was not possible because it more like fanciful than his others. I’ll keep reading the series but WHAT NEXT for this unlucky fellow.

Bit bloody but good

I liked it yes I enjoyed this yarn. I really like the chief inspector he’s real and has a good sense of fun. I will read more if there are more

Enjoyable. A worthy read.

I will definitely buy more, which is the ultimate review response.

This had me completely interested the whole way through. Edge of my seat sometimes. Ending could have explained a little more but was sufficient.

I think the narrator is perhaps the best I've listened to. I normally steer clear of Scottish yarns due to my partial deafness, but this could not be clearer. Crystal!

A diverting read, but not my favourite.

I've read all the Tony MacLean series and I have to admit I found this latest one a bit disappointing. There were one or two interesting new characters and mercifully this one was free of the annoying Mrs. Saifra (I'm guessing the spelling), but, omg, why is Tony still so stilted. He is supposed to be in a long-term relationship with Emma and they are like two cardboard cutout people. Get out Emma, find a man with a pulse.

The story is reasonably interesting but swerves predictably into Hammer House of Horrors at the climax, after a tediously detailed description of some old farm building. Clunky references to past cases litter this book, presumably to remind the reader of early parts of the series. It is really distracting.

I did enjoy the character of the retired Deputy Chief Inspector (?) who is living in an aged care home. The author gives her the dignity of having lived a useful and important life, which is often not acknowledged about elderly people, especially women.

Ian Hanmore's narration was excellent, as always.
