About this listen

Five went up. Only four came down . . .

In April 2006, fifteen-year-old Oliver went hiking to the lookout on Burning Mountain - and vanished without trace.

His schoolfriends - Bob, Bell, Phil and Paul - were the last ones to see him on the trek, yet the teenagers were never able to explain his disappearance.

Almost twenty years later, Detective Rebecca Giles is called to bushland on nearby Mount Wingen. There a skull has been dug up, reviving the mystery that has haunted the Upper Hunter area for years.

Giles is convinced that they have finally found the missing boy, and that his four friends - all now in their mid-thirties - have always known much more than they revealed. In particular, about the argument that caused Oliver to head down the mountain on his own.

But when she discusses the case with her father, retired Superintendent Benjamin Giles, another suspect is thrown into the mix. One that for Giles is uncomfortably close to home . . .

so real, a great listen

don't be put off by the narration. sadly I found her voice grating. but you tend not to focus on it when the story unfolded. I even had a giggle when after robbing the fish monger they all met at burning Mountain for a disagreement. when Paul the local bully robbed them. the way they still at the age of 30 something still acted like school children. I can't go into detail as this will only give the story away. .highly recommend this book and look forward to the next.

Rebecca and her team are a breath of fresh air

Just like the first book in the series, Tindal does a stellar job of creating a terrific and plausible premise, as well as a protagonist who’s complex and intriguing. The thing I love the most is that Rebecca Giles is never maligned for her gender, she’s just a great cop with a strong team. It’s refreshing to have a female character front and centre without her ‘femaleness’ being a focal point of the story. Great author. Great series.

Terrible narration

Storyline was ok, narration was terrible. Made it sound like Aussies were a bunch of rednecks.most Aussies do not talk like that, and needs to learn the towns and how to pronounce them Wingen is pronounced Win “Jen” Not Win “gen” overall wouldn’t buy another from this author
