Publisher's Summary

The story of the Warner Brothers studio is the story of the American dream - an immigrant family who escaped a violent beginning, and arrived penniless in America, only to conquer its newest and most lucrative art form. The Warner formula was simple - to thrill audiences with stories torn straight from the headlines, and as such, Warner Studios became the home of the crime film.

Some of the most incredible stories of the twentieth century were born in the mafia, from the shadowy machinations of Al Capone and his war on Chicago's North Side Gang, to the macabre tale of "Il Diavolo" and his juvenile henchmen....

In Bullets And Blood, hear the tale of the crime movie in the twentieth century, the incredible story of the Warner family and those they loved, and of James Cagney, the iron-willed redhead from the belly of New York, who would go on to become their biggest star.

Total family enjoyment

My kids accidently got listening to it and it was fantastic. One or two scenes I had to quickly skip over, a few swear words, but worth the riveting story. What a wonderful free surprise!

Fascinating, heartbreaking, uplifting...

This was absolutely great - totally fascinating, I was addicted from the first episode. I learned so much, I found myself talking to the characters, I laughed and I most definitely cried! There was obviously some poetic license to create drama, but that just adds to the atmosphere... There's a little bit of not-suitable-for-kids content and a little language but it doesn't ruin the story. I definitely recommend this to any fan of movies, Americana or history, or anyone who, like me, is just curious. Simply loved it!!!

Any Film or History Fan Needs This MASTERPIECE!!

What a wonderful, exhilarating and heartbreaking tale of Warner Bros and James Cagney. The golden age of Hollywood I grew up thinking i'd never care about or pay much attention to because it was Black and White and I was born in 82. I'm so glad it took me back and showed me how great and how scary it was. so proud to have learned what a great man Cagney really was and now I'd love to see all his films. What a wonderful bunch of Brothers (par 1 Jack Warner) the Warner Bros were and how much they fought their way to show us what a Film is and all from a Pocket Watch ;) The Narrator Adam Roch bought this to life. He was amazing and I laughed and cried hard many times. Thankyou.

Incredible. Storytelling At It’s Finest.

This entire piece quite literally brought me to tears by the end of it. Roche’s incredible ability to tell a story that spanned a century brought each and every Hollywood bonafide legend to life, experiencing the highs and the lows of their lives along with them. The detail that the author went to is astounding and links each episode with perfection. The delivery had me laughing, cheering and crying and even made me think about my own siblings and our relationship, I found myself wondering if it’d be the same types of dynamics and attitudes. There are a host of forgotten names of Hollywood that are brought to life also, and now, certainly within my own mind, will never be forgotten. There is even the odd dictator and the incredible stands that were taken against him. Honestly, if you are a fan of old Hollywood and it’s myths and legend (and even if you are not) get this series. I sincerely hope this will one day be found and commissioned into a TV series that would truly link Movies, TV & Radio of which is the very backdrop of this story. Thank you Adam for creating something so remarkable that brings back to life the incredible Golden Age of Hollywood.

Loved it !

I wasn't sure about a 30 parter. I get bored easily and couldn't see myself getting through it all. However it was a free download and I LOVE Adam Roche and his work so I tried it out. I'm so glad I did because it's a treat. Adam Roche has his usual delivery style. I know some reviews say he's overdramatic and it's irritating but personally I love it. He's great at injecting humour, pathos and sincerity and I find myself swept into another world so easily. I've not found another narrator that can do this so well. I didn't know anything about Warner Bros other than Looney Tunes so I found the whole story fascinating. The change from growing up close to their final days was devastating. I particularly loved the James Cagney stories - it's rare to hear a love story as great as his and he himself was a fantastic character. I'd love to see this made into a movie - it has love, affairs, revenge, backstabbing, childhood stories, brotherhood, amateur boxing, Hitler, the introduction of sound in movies, the move into radio, the trends in cinema, contract law, the casting couch, terrible managerial skills, rape, inequality, familial squabbles, illness and death, humour, sadness and so much more. I'd recommend this amazing series.

Possibly the best thing on Audible

This is the greatest series I've ever listened to. The pacing is perfect and the occasional background music and movie excerpts enhances the story wonderfully. This tale has every emotion running through it and is told with such passion that it is clear that this was a labour of love. This story is a must for all movie fans.

Roller coaster ride of emotions!

Couldn't stop listening to this emotive tale which brought the distant grainy figures of old Hollywood right up to date in high definition technicolour. I was punching the air in triumph and shedding tears right along with the real life characters of yesteryear. Simply the best thing I've listed to to date.

I Want More From Adam Roche

Don't hesitate to grab any of Adam Roche's audible books. The information is so enthralling and entertaining and is only outmatched by the expert story telling. This book is a fascinating history of the Golden Age of gangster Hollywood. The only problem I had with this audio is that it ended!

Wonderful podcast, the best I have ever heard

Adam Roche is a genius! His Hitchcock and Audrey Hepburn podcasts are also exceptional. He has turned casting into an art form and his love for his subjects shines through. Great narration and perfectly fitting but subtle background music and occasional sound effects complete the experience.

Pure Hollywood

An absorbing saga told in a style so true to its subject. If it were made into a movie, I wouldn’t bother watching because the pictorial telling of the story could not surpass Roche’s magnetic vocal delivery.
