Publisher's Summary

Meshel Laurie has had a very varied career, but whether she's working the front desk at a brothel or anchoring drive-time radio, it's always had one common thread: she is a self-confessed workaholic. Thankfully, over the years she's learnt to temper her tendencies with a bit of Buddhist perspective - and you can too!

Meshel shares her own experiences with wit and wisdom and explores how to navigate the modern workplace (and stay sane), how to handle difficult relationships with colleagues, how to deal with work stress and - of course - how to achieve that ever-elusive work-life balance.

Must Listen

This is an easy insightful, entertaining and touching book. Honest and open it presents the teachings in such a practical way - if you're not a parent it is easy to relate to which is so rare. It was great to find a book written by a busy working mother that a 'no-children by choice' woman could relate to and appreciate as well.

A Lovely way to find some Calm

Whether you're really busy, or just a little bit too busy; and, despite your views on Buddhism, this book is great. It's narrated by Meshel in a way that sounds assured, and gives plenty of food for thought about what you're doing with your time, and why you're doing it. Sometimes, I find case examples a little boring, but Meshel's examples were relevant and interesting. Meshel and I are the same age - I could really relate to the stories of her younger self in Australia. It's really helped me at a time when my work was spiralling out of control and intruding into my personal life too much, just by being constantly on my mind. It's helped me consider the value I inject into maintaining personal relationships and friendships, and made me really think about what I'm doing and what I'm doing it for. Thanks to Meshel for taking the time to share this book with us all, it's really been a lovely story of hers to tell, and had the impact I'm sure she was hoping it would.

Meshel Laurie's unbelievably busy life

This is really what this is about and how she managed to be less busy. We can all see ourselves in this book at some point and learn some take aways but dont expect to learn about Buddism and its theories/concepts in detail. Check who she is online first if you don't know. It will help better understand the examples she gives. She is Australian and most examples revolve around this country.
Finally, she comes across as a very passionate person, the tone of voice can get annoying at times. Listen to an extract pror to buying the audio book.

Amazing and enlightening

I was really surprised at how much I enjoyed listening to this book as I don’t usually engage with spoken non fiction. But Meshel narrates in a very engaging way and she has a great story telling ability, whilst making the practice of Buddhist teachings accessible to the everyday person.

Didn’t want to be preached at by a comedian

Love Meshel but I expected some of her humor to be present in this book. I probably would have read it into a physical copy but since Meshel is the narrator, I felt like I was being preached at by someone who has made more mistakes in her life than I have. That being said, I do agree with the main sentiment. Just don’t expect any humor.

So relatable

I found this so easy to listen to as the path that Meshel has been on through her life (minus the brothel receptionist job) is so relatable. Throughout this audio book I constantly had the thought of "yes, me too" and made a mental list of at least a dozen people in my life who I also felt would benefit from listening to this. My only mild complaint is that I missed that infamous humour of Meshels although I know that she was simply trying to pass on insight without the distraction of too many jokes.

Well worth the listen and a great place to start in your journey to discover Buddhism.

Yay Australian content

I listen to Meshels True crime pod cast so decided to give this a try.
I’m also curious about Buddhism and this was a gentle way to dip into it.
It’s nice to listen to something Australian as so much of the content I consume is American.
This was an easy and enjoyable listen and I’m sure to play it more than once to get some of the wisdom to sink in a bit more.
