Will make you want to paint a chapter of them...

Hands down the best Spacemarine story I’ve heard so far. Great characters, a story that comes full circle and room for it to go further. The narration is superbly performed my Toby Longworth (loved him in Eisonhorn series).
I’m gonna build and paint me some Brothers of the Snake! 👍🏻

Best Space Marine book yet.

Abnett is a truly talented author who has a fantastic ability of being able to write and create stories in the 40k world which could be appreciated by many readers and listeners who are not fans of the lore.

Brothers of the Snake offered the most genuine insight into the mindset and trials of a Space Marine I’ve read thus far without falling into the stereotypical cheesey “FOR THE EMPERORRRRRRR!” Yelling, Bolter wielding heretic gore affair we are used to.

I can only hope Abnett continues to write something further on the journeys of the Iron Snakes.

A book any fantasy or sci fan fan will really enjoy.

Can not recommend highly enough.

Dan Abnett does it again

A unique space marines chapter gets a unique book written about them as we follow the leader of an elite squad of space marines through several deployments. Normally we only see a single mission in most 40k novels, while in this we get to see more of a "day in the life" take. And as a result, it makes for a very fast read/listen. And an entertaining one at that.

It has a "stylised" feel to it I can't fully explain. There came a point while listening to this where everything being described seemed like something out of a kick-@$$ Genndy Tartakovsky animation, which I then started to imagine, and that made it even more awesome. But the fact that Dan Abnett wrote this should be enough of a reason to check this book out.

My only complaint is that we don't get more of a feel for the entire squad, instead focusing more on their leader and their apothecary. This leads to the rest of the squad feeling somewhat samey, which is a little bit of a let down after Gaunt's Ghosts gave us such distinct characters, but it's not as egregious as other 40k books.

Masterful

Dan Abnett strikes gold yet again - introducing us to some of the most believable, endearing, and HUMAN space marines in the Warhammer World. Hard to believe this is his first time writing Space Marines!

Perfect for fans who prefer smaller squad-focused space marine novels. An excellent choice for Abnett fans. I love the Eisenhorn novels, but I think I actually like the Snakes even more!

This might be my new favorite.

I loved it.
It's probably one of the best 40k books I've ever read/listened to.

Some books go out of their way to show how transhuman Space Marines are, to the point where you can't really call them human at all (therefore unrelatable) but this one strikes a good balance between superhuman feats and human vulnerability. Plus there's a dog. Dog's make everything better.

The performance of the narrator was exemplary as well.

very aged but ok

If you are a fervent read of 40k this book will upset or confuse you with a lot of stupidity in it. its very aged and a a lot of retconned stuff is in this book. Its ok if you want to learn more about the chapter. spoiler ahead: theres one scene where the mc an astartes is talking to a friend he hasnt seen in sometime and he says wow you have aged a lot in 12 years to where the character replies its been 40 years since theu last met the book them tries to explain how warp travel caused his body to have aged 12 years but her being stagnant aged 40. How did an astartes not have access to a calendar?

another homerun

at first it came across as kinda a series of short stories but once I realized it's really the story of this whole squad it became so much better of story and the imagery as well takes you to a world that is reminiscent of ancient Greece.

Brilliant change but still authentic

As a modern day addict of 40k audiobooks. I can find some stories droll and shallow.

but this story is incredibly authentic. and is beautifully written. the character development is exceptional, the story is perfectly balanced with action and plot.

its refreshing to listen to how the battle plays out in enough detail that you understand how they fight and what they do rather than a general recounting of "they came, they smash, the conqueror"

Toby Longworth lives up to what we now expect of him. that is excellent and authentic performances that a perfect for the 40k universe.

Bravo! more please Dan!!

Probably the best 40k I've read

This was the first 40k book I bought and read, and it got me into the Warhammer 40k Universe.

Still an amazing read and I highly recommend it.

A really solid standalone 40k book

I wasn't really sure about it for the first hour or so but then it settles in nicely . Story is engaging , narration is good and despite the snakes being a founding of ultra smurfs they don't go batshit mad over the fact. the main focus on a single perspective was nice as it is both rarer and I find a better mode of storytelling. This also removes the usually annoying enemy character sections i.e wordbearers and actually keeps an element of suspense while peoples actions mostly make sense instead of just falling in line with the plot. Another good book by Dan Abnett would recommend.

Dan Abnett creates the best characters

It can be a hard task creating believable space marine characters and chapters as the are just so inhuman despite being the greatest defenders of humanity! Not a problem for Dan Abnett however. his characters are always relatable and unique and he does a fine job of creating a chapter that is at once true to the archetype but unique an interesting. Hopefully we see more of the Iron Snakes in the lore going forwards.
