About this listen
A captivating Australian thriller from the bestselling author of Black River.
A late-night phone call is never good news for Homicide Detective Sergeant Rose Riley. This time she's being sent up to the Hunter Valley, where a woman has been found dead in her home.
Rose grew up further along the valley. She knows that for every vineyard and golf course resort visited by tourists to the 'wine country', there are as many dilapidated fibro houses and drug dens, in the shadow of one of the state's largest prisons.
A media hound points the finger at the husband, angering Rose, but capturing the attention of journalist turned true crime author Adam Bowman. His book on the 'Blue Moon Killer' made him famous but the case nearly cost Rose her life, and she's not sure how she feels about seeing him again.
Suspects abound, from the grieving husband to sinister business interests and suspicious locals. But when new evidence connects the crime to an old case, Rose realises they have no time to lose. The murderer is ready to strike again.
Critic Reviews
'If you like a good police procedural, you'll love this.' (CHRIS HAMMER, author of The Valley)
'Broke Road is a real page-turner. I even stayed up late to finish it … and that never happens!' (JANE CARO, author of Lyrebird)
'Place, pace and brilliantly detailed police procedure. Matthew Spencer's Broke Road has everything you'd want from a crime thriller. Well drawn characters driving an intricate sophisticated plot.' (MICHAEL BRISSENDEN, author of Smoke)
'Black River showed Matthew Spencer's expertise in building a world with familiar surfaces and dark undercurrents. Broke Road is another taut, compelling crime thriller set in a community in transition: wineries in the sunshine, struggling mining towns in the shadows. The suspense builds in each scene as Riley and Bowman try to unlock the secrets behind a brutal slaying.' (MALCOLM KNOX, author of The First Friend)
Loved the plot - the development of the characters especially between the Police - Riley / Patel and Rodrigues and the reporter Bowman. Their bond and trust of each other added to the story. The settings in different areas of Australia was brilliant too and described well. Spencer also described the lifestyles of the people in these areas well too which really pulled you into the whole story.
Police procedure read well too.
There were some twists in the plot which really added to the story.
The narrator did a great job.
Just brilliant.
Brilliant story with many twists

Broke Road is book two in the DS Rose Riley Series.
Much like book one in the series, Black River, Broke Road is an Australian police procedural that opens with the discovery of a body and DS Rose Riley being hauled out of bed. Broke Road is billed as “An unputdownable Australian thriller” - I can confirm this is true.
After reading Black River, I said that I was “looking forward to diving into book two, Broke Road,” and I DID dive into Broke Road. I sped through it. I was given the e-ARC of Broke Road, but I purchased the audio version partway through so I could listen while doing chores over the weekend.
There’s an element in the book that took inspiration from an article I had read (The Voyeur’s Motel by Gay Talese), because it was illustrated by one of my favourite illustrators, Emilio Ponzi. (sidebar - Emilio also illustrated the podcast artwork for the most recent session of ‘In the Dark,’ which also gets a big thumbs up from me.)
Broke Road is set in the wine country of the Hunter Valley, where Rose grew up, and she’s aware of the area’s demographics, which means that there are plenty of suspects (or are they red herrings?), and then, when the case becomes connected to a cold case, Rose realises they have another serial killer on their hands.
I recommend this compelling, twisty and suspenseful crime novel!
If you like Australian outback thrillers or police procedurals and/or books with strong female leads, examples would be books written by Catherine Lee, Shelly Burr, Jane Harper or Dervla McTiernan
Thumbs up 👍
