Publisher's Summary

A realm aside from our own. The center of the realities. Home to every spectrum of magic.

From the beautiful to the terrible, it was all held in delicate balance by the Eternal Emperor and his immortal children. For 10,000 years, the empire was the bastion that protected the sentient races from the darkness, but the revolution, and the War of the Gods has changed all that . . .

Jax seems like a regular guy, except that he fights creatures from a strange place called the UnderVerse in his sleep, leaving him covered in horrific scars when he wakes up. The mysterious disappearance of his brother five years prior has forced Jax into a holding pattern, with a job he tolerates, a girl he kinda, sorta loves . . . until he's kidnapped and given a stark choice by his asshat of a father: Go to the UnderVerse in reality, travel to the capitol of that ruined realm at the center of reality, and open a portal for the Noble Houses to return home . . .

Or die, slowly.

That's the good news. The bad is that he has to survive the arena first, to prove his right to go. Twelve will enter, only one can leave . . .

A good listen

the primary review for this audiobook complains about the performance so I'll address that first. the story revolves around a down on his luck delinquent and you can hear it from the beginning of the narration. if you can't handle someone with that personality type then the voice will be grating, but for the sake of the novel it is an excellent coloring to the narration as it really gives a sense of personality to the character and his thoughts as the story is written in first person.

The story is interesting, but you can see many of the skill and stat systems refined in Jez Cajiao's other series the age series. (starting with age of stone) I thoroughly recommend it if you enjoy litrps and can enjoy low-brow payback humor.

Fantastic

I loved the story. Jax is correct... This book needs a wiki 😀
It took me a little while to warm up to the narrator using a Scottish accent for the main protagonist, but it's understandable.

worth the time

A really good first book here. There were a few tropes of the genre, but the story is solid. Characters are interesting, the plot points are relevant, and the setting is very deep and interesting. I'm looking forward to the next one. side note give it a ago it's worth it you won't be sorry just give it a chance the 1st review on here is very misleading and untrue

A true trial

incredibly hard to make it through.
narration is a bit of. shock but I could probably get past it.
the story is in the first person perspective of someone with well below average intelligence trying to over explain every detail
