Oktober 1934 in Hamburg einschifft um Deutschland zu verlassen und nach Shanghai zu emigrieren, findet sich in seinem Reisegepäck neben wenigen persönlichen Dingen die erste Fassung seines Romanmanuskripts mit dem Titel "Das Einhorn". Sein Leben im Exil ist bis zu seinem Tod im Jahr 1937 geprägt vom Kampf, eine neue Existenz in Shanghai aufbauen zu wollen.
Juliane Köhler liest, in der Rolle seiner daheim gebliebenen Frau Käthe, die Briefe, die Mohr fast täglich vom Irrsinn im Babylon am Jangtse schreibt. Als sein Koffer 1937 zurückkommt, enthält dieser die noch unvollendete zweite Fassung von "Das Einhorn". In der persönlichen Form eines Tagebuchs erzählt Max Mohr die Geschichte dieses Fabeltiers, gelesen von Doris Schade (Mutter), Heidy Forster (Freundin der Mutter) und Paul Herwig (Sohn) in den Rollen der Protagonisten.
