Geburtstag den langen Brief einer Unbekannten in seiner Post. Aus der Distanz der Anonymität erzählt sie von ihrer unerwiderten Liebe zu ihm. Der Schriftsteller versucht - überwältigt vom Inhalt des Briefes - seine Begegnungen mit der Frau zu rekonstruieren, kann sich jedoch nur bruchstückhaft erinnern. Sie ist für ihn nur eine gesichtslose Geliebte unter vielen, letztlich eine Unbekannte.
Stefan Zweig (1881–1942), in Wien geborener Autor, lebte von 1919 bis 1935 in Salzburg, zog danach nach Großbritannien und emigrierte 1940 nach Brasilien. Neben seinem epischen Werk gelangte er durch seine historischen Miniaturen ("Sternstunden der Menschheit") und biographischen Arbeiten zu Berühmtheit.
