Publisher's Summary

In a near-deserted coastal village, odd things are happening. Strangers are asking questions about the town's recluse. A local hunter discovers naked footprints in the snow. The stray dog population has ceased to exist. And with winter's most powerful weapon bearing down, things are about to become much, much worse. A werewolf book. Not a romance. Not at all.

Gripping stuff

I don't normally do this genre of book, but the supernatural themes seem to beckon. The authors' crafting of the scenery and characters in vivid detail and the dialogue turn of phrase, whilst very course at times, being me from edge do your seat to out loud chuckle, all in the space of a minute or so. If you don't mind raw bloody violence and salty language, give it a go.

Always refreshing

As always with this author, very raw accounts of humanity done with fantastic humour, insight, and holding back no punches. Love it. It’s how I would write. Quirky story probably based on the “what if” thought meanderings over a few drinks I feel. Not for everyone if you’re sensitive to naughty words as appears in other “reviews”. For everyone else, it’s fun.

Disappointing

I LOVED this author's "Mountain Man" series, and I have listened to it more than once, it's sooooo good if you are into the apocalyptic fiction genre. I was excited to get into this series from Keith C Blackmore thinking it would be as enjoyable, engaging and entertaining. This is not any of those things.

I was listening for a long while, over several periods of time, and then I realised I was still kinda waiting for it to start getting interesting. I checked how far into the book I had listened and was surprised to find I had persevered through 2/3s and yet I didn't feel anything for any of the characters and barely knew who was who, they all just meshed together. The introduction to the story is the story, the most interesting part is the demise of Borland and yet he was the most interesting character and killing him off so early felt like where the book failed. He declares WAR, and then he's gone. After that it's just a yawn fest of pointless gore.

I really wanted this to be good, hence my perseverance but it's not getting any better or interesting and I've about 2 hours to go, as I wonder if I should just call it now and get my credit back and use my time on another book.

Make. It. A. Movie.

Could not put it down. I very much enjoyed the story, working in some new ideas to essentially a story we all know the contents of before we read it. For me, the no-holds barred writing style spoke true for the characters and I found myself engaged in the locals as much as waiting to get to the next chapter and experience another brutal display of ancient power.
This is the escapism I live for 😀

An excellent surprise

I’ve never been interested in werewolves but this was an excellent, entertaining, gruesome and fun experience. The author makes you want to pack up to Canada while at the same time provides some great jumps and laughs in what is the most fun I’ve had with a horror book in an age. Recomend.

Werewolves

really liked it. was hooked from beginning to end. There is also a lot of humor which made me laugh out loud. The characters are great and the gory scenes are bloody but not off putting. Ok, just downloaded the second one got to go.

A really good book

I wouldn't normally go for a werewolf book, but I like this author, so I gave it a go. I'm glad I did. This book takes the classic werewolf story in a new direction. Loved it. :)

Add another feather in Keith's cap!

I LOVED THE MOUNTAIN MAN OMNIBUS! And the prequel was very much wanted and needed. Already owning all of his other works, I decided to dive into this. I'll admit it did take me about an hour to get in the "groove", but well worth the wait! And to think, I have two more additions to listen to!😎

Blackmore is amazing

I didn’t know how I’d feel listening to Breeds after Mountain Man. It did take me a bit to get into this one. It wasn’t love at the first few seconds like with Gus. But once the story began to take off I was really connected.

The way Blackmore creates and layers characters is amazing, the build was slow but really pleasant. I think the sequels will be even better, I cannot wait to hear what happens.

I love this author!

This was my first book after completing "The Mountain Man"series, which took over my life it was so great! I love the originality of the story, and graphic details that at times had my mouth hanging open with shock, but no one reads a werewolf book for a romantic happy ending. I also really enjoyed the backstory of the politics of werewolf society, with "marshalls" and high order werewolves who call the shots. Can't wait to start book two!

Not a typical werewolf story

I thought this was going to be a typical werewolf story. I was pleasantly surprised when it explored experimentation and perversion of the werewolf 'breed'. Many characters were well flawed and likable. Parts of the story written from the animal's perspective was unexpected and enjoyable. The narrator punctuated the setting and character in a believable and enjoyable manner. Loved it!

Very vivid

This was a very entertaining book. I enjoyed the story and the authors very vivid descriptions. The only thing I found I did not like was some of the dialog between characters. While I in no way mind cussing, some of the cussing was a little excessive in some parts of the book, and seemed forced. Many of the characters ranged from 60-80 years old, and some of their dialogue was unrealistic. The verbiage sounded out of place. A 70 year old Scotch Irish werewolf saying "bring it homie", just doesn't sound right to me. But, that's just my opinion and I may have misheard the reader. Overall it was an entertaining and creative book, with some excellent descriptive writing. I will be reading part two of this series.

Mr Blackmore is the man!

Finally Mr Blackmore returns! One of my favourite zombie authors has delivered a new title 'Breed'. It is not a zombie title but boy was it good! It gets even better, Sean Runnette is the narrator. This guy has the perfect voice for any of Keith C Blackmore's characters, that is if you speed it up to at least 1.25x speed and easily 1.5x speed in most parts.

Seriously I couldn't get enough of this one. Stuff it I am not going to sprout on about this.... just do yourself a favour and buy this one, in fact do yourself a favour and pre order the second one!

Every bit as good as the Mountain Man series. Perhaps better!

Outstanding atypical werewolf story

Breeds is a new and fresh take on the werewolf genre. It starts with a grumpy (to put it mildly) old man and, within the first 5 minutes, you are hooked. No teenager angst, no “oh woe is me, I just want to be liked” here. This is a story about werewolves hunting and not being apologetic about it. The synopsis available on Audible/Goodreads is sufficient and I would recommend avoiding spoilers; experience the book with open eyes and you will enjoy the discoveries. Now, there are some new twists introduced that are not in the typical werewolf story (not gonna ruin the surprises with spoilers) and kudos to Mr Blackmore for the inventiveness of his plot. He certainly has built a novel plot worthy of further exploration in future books and, after finishing Breeds, Book 1, in two days, I immediately purchased the aptly named “Breeds, Book 2”, because, frankly, I simply didn’t want the adventure to end. Thankfully, Book 2 picked up immediately where Book 1 left off and was just as satisfying but ended on an excellent cliffhanger that has me “jonesing” for the third and final installment of the trilogy (not out yet as I write this, damnit!).

Sean Runnette is the voice talent/performer of this excellent audiobook. I immediately recognized him from Mark Tufo’s Zombie Fallout series and, honestly, it took me a few minutes to disassociate the ZF experience with his voice and get in the mindset of a new, unfamiliar book. But after that initial “audio vertigo”, it was totally worth it. Mr Runnette completely owned every character and provided unique voices to all, male and female. In addition, he expertly built tension into the story with his pacing and nuanced performance. His professional and unique performance made an excellent book a “must-hear” movie-of-the-mind audio experience.

Bottom line: Breeds is among the best werewolf books I have listened to. Fyi, the only werewolf audiobook I can think of that is better off the top of my head is “Monster Hunter Alpha” by Larry Correia so Mr Blackmore is in rarified literary territory and is to be congratulated when his only real competition is the unsurpassable MHI franchise.

Surprisingly Good

What did you like most about Breeds, Book 1?

I only bought this book because I enjoyed the Mountain Man series so much. I am glad I did. Brilliantly written and excellently narrated.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Borland. Even though he isn't really one of the main characters he was believable and 3-dimentional; not at all your typical 2-dimentional "bad guy".

What about Sean Runnette’s performance did you like?

His accents. Runnette did an excellent job of bringing the book and the characters to life.

Any additional comments?

A note to Keith Blackmore (even though I doubt he'll ever read it): Please stay away from overworked, tired cliches. I sighed when I heard the narrator speak the words "The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was to convince the world he didn't exist" - although this has been used in too many books, tv shows and movies to mention it reminds me of the awful Swatzenegger movie End of Days. You're writing is so much better than that and such a cheap line betrays your talent and taints your work!

A note to Audible: I really hope Audible have plans to bring more of Blackmore's books to listeners. I am very disappointed that there are only 2 series of books from this writer. The Mountain Man series of books are my favourite downloads from my many years of membership and Breeds book 1 was almost as good.

a new look at a subject that's been done to death

I'm not getting the narrator as much as I did RC BRAY. but not so bad I didn't get drawn in
to the story. Quite good but MM is a hard one to follow so if judged on its own still a great book.

The (Audible) world needs more Keith C Blackmore.

Where does Breeds, Book 1 rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This is definitely a top 10 audio book for me.

What did you like best about this story?

The book flowed at a great pace and didn't take an age to get to the crux of the story. The excellent use of profanity is an art form. For KCB to write and the narrator to perform such venomous words in a way that it makes you burst out laughing is brilliant .......

Any additional comments?

I've never been a big follower of the werewolf, vampire genre but after listening to the Mountain Man series I was desperate to see what Keith C Blackmore's other books were like and it didn't disappoint. I cant wait for the other books in the series to be released and hope that some of his other books get recorded for Audible.

Excellent as usual from Blackmore

This guy is a fabulous author and I am so glad I found his work. A fitting audible follow up to the Mountain man series. Runnette had RC Bray's very big boots to fill as far as narration, and he has done a great job. Can't wait for part 2!
