About this listen

When you read about someone sailing around the world, it’s usually a dotcom millionaire or a professional adventurer. Brave or Stupid? tells a very different story. It’s an everyman tale about a middle-aged, seasick electrician with no money who suddenly and for no reason decides to sail around the world. It’s the story of Yanne Larsson, a man with a dream born not out of a passion for sailing or a search for identity or the need for a challenge. This is the story of a simple handshake. One of the old-fashioned, ironclad ones.

A casual suggestion over wine with best friend Carl Andersson turns into one of those ideas that just won’t go away. Twenty-four hours later, a handshake decides it. The little details—buying a boat, learning to sail, and saving up money—take five years, but in 2002, the two men leave Helsingborg, Sweden on a three-year voyage that will change them forever. Storms, tropical diseases, drama, love, and comedy—their story is an adventure like no other. Brave or Stupid? is a book for anyone who has ever gone beyond what is sensible and realistic to discover a whole new world outside and a whole new person inside. This is a book for anyone who still believes in the power of dreams. And handshakes....

My absolute favourite audiobook! Have listened to this book countless times. The story is inspirational and funny. Love listening to the boys’ adventures.

Inspirational and Humorous

I want to open by addressing the only issue with this audiobook, which is the unfortunately rather poor editing of the narrators recording - the first ten minutes or so are pretty bad with multiple takes left in by the editor accidentally. There are a few more throughout the story, but I encourage you to persist, they are a minor inconvenience only, and the story is well worth it.

This tale of adventure is an all time favourite. Having listened to it in serial format on a podcast some five or six years ago, I have re-listened to it almost yearly, and its magic has never waned. Yanne’s telling of the story is beautiful and simple, with great imagery that snaps you quickly away from your commute or housework, to idyllic pacific atolls, or the wild high seas. Moreover, his record of the interactions with Carl and the other characters met on the journey is wonderful, and I find myself wishing frequently for more information on many of their own lives and journeys.

I look forward to introducing my son to this story as he grows up and can understand the sweetness of a challenging but adventurous life.

A beautiful sea story

Loved it from start to finish.. so much so that in the past year I have read it 3 times and bought a paperback for a good mate of mine.

Bloody good read

I liked the story which again proved you don’t have to have been borm on a boat to sail around the world
I disliked the number of times the naration repeated itself or jumped to a new part

Good story with poor production
