Publisher's Summary

Debilitating brain disorders are on the rise - from children diagnosed with autism and ADHD to adults developing dementia at younger ages than ever before. But a medical revolution is underway that can solve this problem. Astonishing new research sheds light on the influence of the human microbiome in every aspect of health, including your nervous system.

In Brain Maker, Dr Perlmutter explains the connection between intestinal microbes and the brain, describing how the microbiome develops from birth and evolves based on the environment, how it can become 'sick', and how nurturing gut health through a few easy strategies can alter your brain's destiny for the better.

With simple dietary recommendations and a highly practical program of six steps to improving gut ecology, Brain Maker opens the door to unprecedented brain health potential.

Planning to listen to it again

As a vegan I take some of the information with a grain of salt, but I learned so many new things and I plan to listen to it again, as it can get quite technical and heavy with scientific terms. You can skip the technicalities and remember the essence, but I love a bit of science and want to make sure I know my “whys”.

Pseudo science ... avoid

If you like reading or listening to a book that is akin to religious indoctrination, this is the book for you. The writer, who is a doctor, has a selective mind that is largely closed to science and reason, except when an academic article confirms his beliefs. The book is full of taboos, such as gluten and fruit, presented in a way that is almost laughable (ok, so I did enjoy some of it!). There is no analysis of for instance the role of sourdough fermentation. Sadly, the author’s style and tone is one of conversion: eat my diet, and my recipes, and all will be well. Unfortunately life and science is more complicated. If you are interested in the fascinating science and research about the microbiology of our gut, avoid this book. Another popular book, 10% Human, offers a more balanced and insightful introduction to this important subject.
