Publisher's Summary

You feel how you eat.

We accept that the quality of our diet affects the health of our heart and liver. So why wouldn't diet - good or bad - affect the health of our brain?

This is the question that Australian scientist Felice Jacka set out to answer. Having suffered depression and anxiety as a young woman, she wanted to understand the role diet plays in our overall mental and brain health. What she found through her own research and that of other eminent scientists worldwide will revolutionise the way we think about what we eat and how we care for our brains.

* Obesity and depression are two major causes of disease and disability across the globe, and each influences the other.
*Food does affect mood: highly processed foods increase depression risk, while a balanced, whole-food diet can prevent depression and improve mood.
*A healthy diet improves gut health, and in turn health microbiota (gut bacteria) promote brain health and keep our weight in check.
*A healthy diet improves brain performance at all ages, from school-age kids to their work-stressed parents.
*The Mediterranean diet is linked to lower rates of Alzheimer's disease and general cognitive decline in older people.

Professor Jacka, who leads the field of Nutritional Psychiatry research globally, provides not just the most recent scientific evidence but also a range of simple, practical solutions for improving the way we eat on a daily basis, including meal plans and a range of delicious recipes.

This is not a diet book. This is a guide to the good habits that will protect your most precious organ, improve your quality of life and optimise mental and brain health across your lifespan.

Brain Changer Could Change Your Life

Just finished listening to Felice’s audio book. I’m familiar with her work, but hadn’t read any of it in detail. I’ve recently modified my diet working with a dietitian to better manage my gut issues. The diet I was on, initially eliminated all processed and ultra processed foods, grains, diary, alcohol, restricted tea, coffee and other caffeine drinks. It wasn't easy, gradually over five months I returned to eating a normal whole foods diet, which is a Mediterranean style eating plan. I was a vegetarian and because my protein food choices were limited to Soy, Tempeh, Protein power and eggs, I decided to add small servings of lamb, salmon and white fish. I was also doing gut-based Hypnotherapy using an App. The processed food free diet improved my gut symptoms. However the biggest change is a huge improvement in my moods. I have lived with a major depressive disorder for at least thirty years. Managed fairly well with drugs, psychotherapy and exercise. Felice’s Brian Changer protocol has just provided evidence to support my experience. Felice has personal lived-experience of moods disorders. I’ll be reading it again to see if I missed anything. Anyone with a mood disorder could benefit from reading/listening to this book. Those without mood disorder could benefit as well by avoiding lifestyle diseases associated with diets high in processed and ultra processed foods. Like Felice I say give “Big Food” and their products the flick. Thanks Felice and your team. 🙏🏼

Brain Changer = Life Changer

I've struggled for many years with various diets with the goal to lose weight in the interest of my appearance and health. Struggled I said.
This is the first book that I've read that has given me the inspiration and understanding that I believe I have been looking for.
I had vaguely heard about it at work as it was highlighted for an Education session which I missed.
I work in the Mental Health sector and was interested in the Mood and Food components..
I believe this is a must read for everybody... young and old, Parents, Teachers... everyone.
I love hearing authors narrate their own work and Prof Jacka made it an easy listen.

Really Interesting

She is very much an academic, so don't expect it to be read in any sort of entertaining way. However, the information is important and overall good. She covers so many great points backed by interesting studies. Many parts relevant for most people, but the core of this is for white/ Anglo-Saxon audience as the book mostly assumes you are from a white or western culture. Points should still be noted as many ideas can still be adapted to suit.

Cursory overview often deviating from the topic

The author frequently deviates from the topic to talk about herself... wish the evidence was presented in a more structured clear manner
