2014 USA Best Book Awards Winner: Finalist, Parenting & Family

Most books on ADHD don't dare expose the genuine grit of the moment-by-moment peaks and valleys of this special parenthood - the gut-wrenching, crying on the bathroom floor, feeling like you're losing your mind truth of the matter that is learning to successfully parent a child with ADHD. Boy Without Instructions: Surviving the Learning Curve of Parenting a child with ADHD changes that.

Williams shares her unfiltered thoughts and emotions during her progression through this learning curve during this harrowing ride. Right before your eyes, this initially grief-stricken momma transforms from obsessed-with-ADHD control-freak and helicopter mom to optimistic and (mostly) confident parent of a child who happens to have ADHD. Boy Without Instructions validates your grief and guilt, yet reveals that it's truly possible to craft a (mostly) joy-filled life for your child with ADHD, yourself, and your family.

Understanding

Boy without instructions was just the book I needed at this time. My son was diagnosed with ADHD earlier this year. I felt like I was the Mum in this book. It helped me feel like I'm not alone in this journey and help inspire me to all I can for my son. Thank you Penny

Relatable

Listening to this mamas journey with her sons ADHD made me laugh and made me cry. I could relate to a lot of it. As a person without much of a support network it was nice to feel like we aren't the only ones going through this

A great book very well written

Having been on a similar journey, I found this book accurate, realistic, and at times, humorous. A good depiction of what life with ADHD is for some families. highly recommended.

Seeking a village...

I suppose the main reason anyone would seek out this book would be if they were in a similar situation as Penny and her family.

As it is, my son's diagnosis is pretty much bang on identical to Ricochet's... so this story was most insightful, helpful, comforting and really worthwhile.

It is my first non technical port of call in terms of ADHD / Dysgraphia / processing disorder reading so it really was a great relief. I shed some tears probably just glad to know we aren't alone, but also seeing the breadth of everything laid out.

Highly recommended.

sole refreshing,

I have never laughed, cryed, smiled and gone I'm not the only one as much I did in this book.
it's not a yes no parent book just a story of one family's journey and it's sole refreshing.

especially being that mum that gets the wild child looks or do u discipline your child comments.

while also having such a fun loving little boy.

this book speaks volumes and it's a really good listen.

Truely amazing!

This was amazing, truely amazing. I spent most of the book in tears, because it is so relatable and I really felt everything that was being said.

Hard to listen to at times

Written like a bunch of blog posts all bundled together, this audio book is very SEO heavy and focused on American academic achievement. It wasn’t the hope-filled book I thought it might be. As an autistic mother, I can identify with some of the thoughts the author shared (who is likely autistic herself but hasn’t realised yet!). A very real and honest listen. But not one I’ll go back to for encouragement.

Disheartening

It was a little disheartening and hard to finish. Lots of more of the same melt down moments and it felt like there was little to no hope by the end. Weary acceptance maybe.
