This is one of the best stories by Maupassant. It was published originally as a part of a collection directed by Zola, and it is an attack on bourgeois double standards that accept that a woman gives herself to save others, but after having done so, she is spurned. Also included is "The Necklace" with its surprising ending and the tender "The Father of Simon", in addition to other stories that bear witness to the talent of the author.
