About this listen

Back in his hometown of Sugar House, running his family's board game shop and cafe, Ben Rosencrantz just can't seem to get his life to pass go, much less collect $200. Once he was a happily married English professor in Seattle. Now he's a divorced caregiver, looking after his ill father and a Chihuahua named Beans while still figuring out the rules of retail management. At least the town has become more LGBTQ+ friendly than when Ben was a teenager—and that flower shop owner, Ezra McCaslin, enjoys flirting with him.

But despite his usual clientele of gamers, Ben is barely earning enough to keep the store running and stay on top of his father's medical bills. Then a local toy and game collector named Clive offers him a winning strategy—to purchase a turn-of-the-twentieth-century edition of The Landlord's Game, the realty and taxation game that inspired Monopoly, at a tenth of the rare edition's true value. Suspicious of Clive's shady, low-priced deal, Ben turns the offer down.

Then Clive turns up dead at the front door of Ben's shop and a backpack full of $100 bills appears on his doorstep. Now Ben is the #1 suspect in Clive's death, and unless he and Ezra can prove his innocence and find the real killer, he'll go to jail for murder—and no amount of double dice rolls will set him free . . .

Critic Reviews

"Robert Mac Minshew gives a fun, upbeat performance of this queer cozy mystery set in Salt Lake City.... Minshew narrates with a light touch that works well with the book's nerdy humor and lighthearted tone. Ben sounds just like a stressed-out 30-something business owner.... He captures the many personalities that make up the local gaming community." (AudioFile)

This story introduces an interesting cast of characters (including Beans the chihuahua) and a unique real-world setting (Salt Lake City). Compelled me to pull out a board game or two as well 😄.

a sweet "quosy" mystery

Ben Rosencrantz is having a bad week. His father’s board game shop / café is losing money and he has no patience for Clive, a pushy collectibles seller who insists he should take out a loan to buy a first edition game. Things get worse when Clive is stabbed to death and the first edition goes missing. With suspicion leaning on Ben, he teams up with Ezra, the owner of the flower shop next door, to solve the case. Ben is still hurting from his divorce which has left him cautious about developing feelings for Ezra, but the two of them do seem to make a good team.

This murder-mystery romance sits in classic cosy mystery territory—there’s little violence or gore, no sex, and a light bubbly tone. I’m guessing this is a debut novel, it’s obviously a labour of nerdy love for the author, with mentions of multiple board games and superhero / sci-fi franchises. The first-person narrative sits with Ben and he’s a fleshed-out character who we get to know quite well. I did find Ben’s reasoning for investigating the murder himself flimsy, but amateur sleuthing often requires the suspension of disbelief so I wasn’t worried. Like all cosy mysteries, it’s an enjoyably easy read, definitely not a deep book. There’s little angst, some zany dialogue and banter, and no cryptic clues to solving the murder. 🎧 I’ve seen comments about the turns of phrase needing some editing but I didn’t really notice that. I guess that’s the benefit of audiobooks, the narrator often covers a multitude of writing sins. Voice actor Robert Mac Minshew had a pleasant voice, appropriate for the character of Ben and the light tone of the book.

An enjoyably light gay cosy mystery!
