About this listen
Born into poverty and orphaned young, Daveth Blyd had one chance for success when his fighting prowess earned him a place in the Tangye city guard - a place he lost to false accusations of theft. Now he scrapes out a living searching for wayward spouses and missing children. When a nobleman offers him a small fortune to find an entertainer who’s stolen a ring, Daveth takes the case.
While Jory Pearce may or may not be a thief, he certainly can’t be trusted. But, enchanted by Jory’s beauty and haunting voice, Daveth soon finds himself caught in the middle of a conspiracy. As he searches desperately for answers, he realizes that he’s also falling for Jory. The two men face river wraiths, assassins, a necromancer, and a talking head that could be Daveth’s salvation on their quest for the truth. But with everyone’s integrity in question and Death eager to dance, Daveth will need more than sorcery to survive.

The main character, Daveth Blyd, is a disgraced city guard, accused of something he didn’t do. From the “Low” district of the city, he makes a living finding people or things — and he’s hired by a noble to find musician, Jory Pearce, who’s accused of stealing something.
Of course, all is not as it seems, and the main plot, which involves, er, a plot, kept me engaged as the pair try to get to the bottom of it all and figure out why their lives have been turned upside down. There's plenty of mystery, danger, adventure, and twists and turns — involving ghostly river wraiths, assassins, necromancers and more.
I enjoyed the contrast between taciturn and fatalistic, knife-wielding Blyd and the more sunshiny Jory Pearce, who chose love over rigid family and society expectations many years before. They've both got scars. I felt the relationship developing between them was built on something real, and both characters transformed over the course of the novel.
The whole novel takes place over a handful of days in the darkest, creepiest corners of a multi-layered city that feels gritty and real. But there’s little more to the world than this city, and I didn't get a sense of history or lore or how the city fits into the wider world. It kind of felt like a dream at times.
Overall, Blyd and Pearce is very enjoyable romantic fantasy mystery. For all its grit, it doesn’t actually get too dark (and I’m a delicate flower when it comes to such things). There’s certainly fighting and a body count, but nothing too gory. The romance is handled with a light touch, and the spice level is fairly low, as well.
I’ll definitely be listening to the audiobook again.
