Publisher's Summary
Twelve-year-old Samuel Collier is a lowly commoner on the streets of London. So when he becomes the page of Captain John Smith and boards the Susan Constant, bound for the New World, he can’t believe his good fortune. He’s heard that gold washes ashore with every tide. But beginning with the stormy journey and his first contact with the native people, he realizes that the New World is nothing like he imagined. The lush Virginia shore where they establish the colony of James Town is both beautiful and forbidding, and it’s hard to know who’s a friend or foe. As he learns the language of the Algonquian Indians and observes Captain Smith’s wise diplomacy, Samuel begins to see that he can be whomever he wants to be in this new land.
Critic Reviews
"Lively historical fiction at its best." (Kirkus Reviews)
"Samuel’s account of the voyage to Virginia, political intrigues among the settlers, and the harrowing first winter of the James Town settlement brings to life figures like Smith, Powhatan, and Pocahontas. Details about food and daily life add realism to the story, and quotes from historical sources begin each chapter." (School Library Journal)

Pretty good
At first I did not think I would like this book. I was required to blood on the river for summer reading. The first 3 chapters I wasn’t enjoying the book but once I kept reading I loved it. It was so real and I could imagine living in that period of time while listening to the book. It felt so real and it showed how different life was in that tile vs now. I would definitely read this book again!

Historical fiction at its best.
This book was much better than I expected. It took a while to become invested in the story, but once the main character made it to Jamestown, I wanted to know what would become of him and the other settlers. I also thought it gave the reader a lot of historical background. This was a truly great historical fiction piece- interesting and educational.

It's so bad. I hate. I want to die. Kill me now for the greater good.
