About this listen

Someone is stalking gold-hunters. Now a wily bushman is stalking them . . .

Terry Drage is not the first amateur gold prospector to rock up to the Murchison Hotel, brag about an exciting discovery - and then vanish into thin air. But Gabe Ahern is determined he will be the last.

No one knows the land around the remote Western Australian town of Cue better than Gabe - a wild dog trapper who's in his element in the bush. Feeling responsible for his friend's fate, he races there to join the search.

But it won't be an easy ride. For a start the local cops seem sure Terry going missing is nothing more than a tragic accident. It's down to Gabe to spot the sinister pattern of disappearances and deaths in recent years.

Plus, the last time Gabe was in his old home town it was under the very worst of circumstances. And now, to stop a killer, he'll need to confront the ghosts from his past.

I was so excited to hear what Gabe was up to this time! I enjoyed the retrospection and the context it created.

Authentic and addictive!

Just like Wild Dogs and No Trace I couldn’t turn Gabe off! I was hooked and just had to know how it ended. Sucks you in from the start like Gabe is sitting telling you the story around your own campfire. Superbly done!

Couldn’t turn it off

Given the wide range of characters and accents I jammed into this book, Ric has once again captured them all beautifully. Thanks mate, love ya work.

These stores are great. You can visualise Gabe as a genuine outback accidental hero. He wouldn’t agree with that title but he’s good at heart and hard as nails. If you live in Australia (or even if you don’t) he is just a fair dinkum believable bush character. Australia’s Jack Reacher. Keep ‘em coming.

Just such a relatable character

Keep Gab rolling, ripper story. Keep us on the edge of our seat. Never pick the plot either

Loved it, start to finish. Moves along without much lull in proceedings. Riveting to the end.

The ending. Compassionate, sincere and above all a respect for all mankind.

In the first book, Gabe was wild and vulnerable. The stakes were high—people were poisoned, others died, and corruption was everywhere. The tension was palpable, and the Afghan character served as a great secondary figure, balancing the chaos and providing a foil to Gabe’s intense personality.

In the second book, the themes of poison and mystery evolved into a gripping whodunnit. It was another solid installment. However, while Gabe remains a beloved character, he’s almost too perfect this time around. He’s too much of a hero, too invincible. Whatever he wishes for, he gets. He never truly fails, and that takes away some of the edge. As fans, we wanted to see him struggle—to see him pushed to the brink, maybe even kidnapped or trapped in a life-threatening scenario. But that never happened.

That said, the story was still strong. The pacing, plot, and writing were all top-notch, and the narration was excellent. It’s a good book, no doubt. But for long-time followers of Gabe, it felt a bit too safe, lacking the grit and vulnerability that made the first book unforgettable

Gabe is now to much of a hero

Trent really grasps the Aussie country bloke and puts him onto paper love reading /hearing about parts of WA that are so familiar to me I have loved reading about Gabe and his journey from wild dogs through to this one looking forward to his next book

The story line really pulls you in and makes it a book hard to stop listening to
