Publisher's Summary

DI Kelly Porter is about to discover just how dark things can get in the Lake District.

When a young woman is found unclothed, unspeaking at an ancient stone circle it's not clear if any crime has been committed. DI Kelly Porter and her team start looking into the circumstances, but the mystery girl disappears.

Soon after, a brutal murder is committed and sinister markings at the scene indicate that the killer had a message. The investigation reveals that in the beautiful Lake District there are those who believe in ancient ways, and within those circles old resentments are spilling over into terrible violence.

Kelly has all the pieces to solve the puzzle, but to put them together she must confront a figure from her past: One who nearly destroyed all that she holds dear. Will she avoid the same fate this time, or can the killer stay one step ahead of her to the bitter end?

A captivating and atmospheric detective novel from a rising star in British crime fiction, perfect for fans of Patricia Gibney and Cara Hunter.

Kelly loses the plot

i enjoy this series for the most part. Kelly from the Lake District has shaped up as strong character, leading a crack team, solving complex crimes. But she is definitely not on form in this book. Perhaps the writer felt Kelly's successes had become a bit overblown and wanted to throw some challenges her way. But rather than triumphing in adversity, in Blood Rites, the usually smart DI seems to lose it completely, failing to join simple dots or even figure out whodunnit when a witness tells her!! Not the best in the series. I'd recommend the earlier books.

Felt betrayed by stomach-turning scenes

I have enjoyed previous books in this series. Not this one. I sense that the author lost her way with this plot and the nauseating details she included. From about a third of the way through, I knew who had done it and who would continue to do the sadistic, sickening killings of people and helpless animals. The victim of one of the most disgusting crimes was unbelievably stupid - walked into something anyone would have avoided. Also, the narrator's admittedly lovely voice seemed oddly detached from the atrocities she described. I will return this book. No amount of gorgeous descriptive writing about the Lake District makes up for the awfulness of this work.

Graphic Animal Cruelty

Shocking turn. I have no idea why the author devolved into this subject but I do not find animal torture mysterious or entertaining. Obviously, I returned the book and will not continue to follow the series.

Not the best book in the series

Definitely not the best in the series (still a very good series of books though). The story is not enough for a book and so there is a lot more filler than in other books in the series. It also takes DI Port a long time to figure out the killer when it seems very obvious early on in the story.

Too much reference to animal cruelty

I didn’t finish this book. I couldn’t handle the descriptions of what they did to the animals. Very disappointed in this book. Usually really Enjoy them.

Second verse, same as the first

This series is starting to feel like it is formula driven. The Teacher has become boring, and honestly the whole situation is unrealistic. Sorry this author is following into the trap of family victims. The more creative writers may use this once, but have enough imagination to move on. I won't be rushing to buy the next book.

Fascinating plot

I enjoy the Kelly Porter series, and the plot in this volume makes for interesting listening, given its focus on pagan religions. I am getting a bit tired of "the teachet," though. Surely there are other criminals who could emerge?

Finally we see DI Kelly Porter is a REAL person!

This was another great book in the DI Kelly Porter series - my favorite so far being Book 5. I won't say it's my favorite murder mystery series. But! It is a great series nonetheless.
However, throughout all of the books thus far, perfect Kelly Porter just seems to always get her man, never tends to have any trouble for what she does at work even though she doesn't always follow the rules, does what she wants, and everyone at work is just an absolute treasure and easy to work with and is great at their jobs and love and respect her. She doesn't have much trouble in her personal life either, with the exception of her sister which isn't really that big of a deal. It makes for a pretty one-dimensional storyline.
Finally, in this story, at least towards the end, we see that there might be just a little bit of trouble in paradise for Kelly Porter. Not like I want that for her, I really admire/resonate with Kelly's story and personality; however, life isn't just a walk on water for everyone, and it's good to know shes human. 😉 Keep em' coming Rachel Lynch!

Not for the faint hearted!

Sorry, this was the first of the series which I found to be unrealistic and far too reliant of extreme cruelty to people and animals. It relied too heavily on this topic to try and keep the reader's interest, rather than develop a cleaver story line. It actually had the opposite affect on me. This seemed to be a break with the previous style of story development and I was quite disappointed with my purchase.

I am just not into the voodoo type stuff, but story was good, couple of very descriptive gory details & shock moments, but really like the charecters. Read very well also.

Very Good

I really enjoyed this one, I was originally a bit unsure about the return of The Teacher and the cliche of an apprentice, but actually quite enjoyed it. I also rather enjoyed the Teachers character more.

As always love the setting of the lakes and the main characters.

Another great read/listen

Like another series about a female detective from Jane Casey, I have really enjoyed the 6 books by Rachel Lynch. The stories of the life of Kelly a DI in the lake district are well written and describe the beautiful landscape so well. The characters are really believable and the stories exciting and often have a good twist. I am really looking forward to the next book.

I would really recommend these books to anyone who likes a good fast moving crime story.
