Il romanzo di Bithedale, o di Valgioiosa, o di Valgioconda, pubblicato nel 1852, è il terzo successo di Hawthorne. Ispirandosi agli ideali di Fourier, un gruppo di benestanti "radical-chic" vivono un'esperienza comunitaria in campagna, lavorando la terra e rinunciando al servizio di domestici come era loro abitudine in città.
L'autore, che narra in prima persona, diviene spettatore di un triangolo amoroso in cui l'amore non è però l'unico o il principale ingrediente. La storia nasce dall'esperienza personale dell'autore nella comunità di Brook Farm, anche se, nella prefazione, l'autore stesso smentisce in parte questa fonte di ispirazione.
