By age 25, Heather Anderson had hiked what is known as the "Triple Crown" of backpacking: the Appalachian Trail, Pacific Crest Trail, and Continental Divide Trail - a combined distance of 7,900 miles with a vertical gain of more than one million feet. A few years later, she left her job, her marriage, and a dissatisfied life and walked back into those mountains. In her new memoir, Heather shares her distinct message of courage - her willingness to turn away from the predictability of a more traditional life in an effort to seek out what most fulfills her.

Woman in the Wilderness tells how one woman learned to dig deep and push the boundaries in order to discover what really matters in life. Miriam is a young Dutch woman living in the heart of the mountains with her New Zealand husband. She lives simply in a tent or hut and survives by hunting wild animals and foraging edible plants, relying on only minimal supplies. For the last six years she has lived this way, through all seasons, often cold, hungry and isolated in the bush. She loves her life and feels free, connected to the land and happy.

Anna was never anything like those "real" runners on telly, but when she read about New Zealand’s 3,000-kilometer-long Te Araroa Trail, she began to wonder...perhaps being a "real" runner was overrated. Maybe she could just run it anyway? The Pants of Perspective is a witty, colorful, and at times painfully raw account of a journey to the edge of what a woman believes herself to be capable of. It is a coming-of-age story that will lead you on a roller-coaster ride through fear, vulnerability, courage, and failure.

In 2003, software engineer David Miller left his job, family, and friends to hike 2,172 miles of the Appalachian Trail. AWOL on the Appalachian Trail is Miller’s account of this thru-hike from Georgia to Maine. Listeners are treated to rich descriptions of the Appalachian Mountains, the isolation and reverie, the inspiration that fueled his quest, and the rewards of taking a less conventional path through life. While this book abounds with introspection and perseverance, it also provides useful passages about hiking gear and planning.

This is an incredible story of adventure, human ingenuity, persistence, and resilience that shows firsthand what it is to adventure as a woman in the most dangerous of circumstance, what it is to be truly alone in the wild, and why someone would challenge themselves with an expedition others would call crazy. For Marquis, her story is about freedom, being alive and wild by nature.

This is a terrific audiobook. It's interesting, well-written, and timely. It's the story of a textbook editor who retires, reads the popular book The Wild Effect and decides to hike the Appalachian Trail - and have an unexpected adventure! The tone is wry humor, tongue in cheek - the author has a great sense of humor, is perky, and as she learns in this adventure, is often in over her head! She is a very likeable character.
Publisher's Summary
Just before her 40th birthday, Gail Francis quit her perfectly good job and set out to hike one of the great trails of the world. Carrying everything she needed on her back, Francis spent five months walking from Mexico to Canada along the Pacific Crest Trail. Along the way, she lost her pack scrambling over scree in the desert, struggled to navigate high mountain passes, and wore the soles off her boots trekking across lava fields - all within some of the most pristine wilderness in the nation. Though she set out alone, her story includes an eclectic cast of characters. From the man walking the entire 2,700 miles in a series of 26 wedding dresses, to the woman making the journey in the company of her pet mouse, Francis learned to count on her fellow hikers for entertainment as well as a few important life lessons.

Good Story...Could Have Skipped The Politics
Overall, a good story, well presented in sensible order and flow. Good descriptions of the areas the author experienced. The narrator did a good job.
I fully respect the author's political views, and whether or not they align with my own is irrelevant. However, a fair part of the book seemed to serve as a political-view platform for the author's beliefs. My feeling is that, if the author wishes to present and promote her political position and beliefs, she should absolutely do exactly that, in the form of a politically based book. But, this book has been offered as a book about hiking the Pacific Crest Trail...a trail which I have hiked part of, with the explicit expectation, thankfully fulfilled, of escaping the world of political discourse and influence. It is a good book, but would have been much more closely aligned to it's purported content without the political interjections.

Impressive
In January I read my first hiking book called “Steps Out of Time: One Woman’s Journey on the Camino” by Katharine B. Soper.
In this book Francis is hiking the PCT (Pacific Crest Trail) from Mexico to Canada. The author is a natural storyteller. Francis does an excellent job describing the countryside. It is so picturesque; I feel I am right there. I am familiar with the areas she describes and that makes her comments more interesting. She also tells of the people she met along the Trail and includes some humor. Both books discuss problems with the feet, primarily blisters. The author states she is a weak hiker. I would disagree with that as she completed the 2700 miles. When I was young, I might have enjoyed this hike, but now I am happy to be a vicarious hiker.
The book is eight hours and thirty-two minutes. Wendy Tremont King does a good job narrating the book.

such a great story about a female's perspective
I thought the voice actor did an awesome job telling the story of a long distance hiker. I felt if the reader was the one who hiked. I felt like I was actually along on the trip.
The stories had just enough details that allowed the listner to visualize the trip without drowning in the details. I really appreciate the writer's perspective and her open mindedness to live. she is definitely someone I would love to hike with.
Congrats on your book and successful PCT hike.
