It is the 41st millennium, and an upstart alien empire has emerged on the Eastern Fringe. After a few skirmishes to retake human worlds from these blue-skinned invaders, the time has come to strike against the so-called Tau Empire.

At the forefront of the Damocles Crusade stand the Ultramarines, commanded by Captain Atheus, the Chapter's Lord Executioner. With his loyal sergeants Numitor and Sicarius by his side, Atheus vows to exterminate the aliens...but the cunning xenos commanders, Farsight and Shadowsun, have other plans.

Epic in Scale, Precise in Detail

This Audiobook was so immensely large in scale I am impressed at the detail and finness in many situations in which scenarios were handled. Not only were the characters largely fleshed out, but so were the arenas of battle and weapons of war.

Amazing reading but the plot shield

The voice acting for this book was awesome a performance that was clean and on point from start to finish.
The main weakness was the plot shield for tge main characters. Now you know that main characters live through the impossible but when this point is made pointed out time after time it stops veing impossible and just annoying, the characters are saved by a thousand last second saves, miracles, and random one shots. This can be done well but in this case it seems just lazy on the writters part.
The rest of the story was fun though seeing each sude adapt to the other. The advanced tech of thr Tau put against the ancient Tech of Mankind makes for some really great battles.

Barely getting into 40k and the Tau are the only faction that really interested me so this book was the perfect thing to start me off on my 40k journey :)

Grim Dark

As a traveling sales rep i spend a lot of time in my car and I listen to a lot of books on Audible to pass the time. That is to say I’ve noticed my tastes of late have gotten more “refined”, not in the snobby sense but more that I know what I like and what I don’t like. Sadly I didn’t like this book. I love the Warhammer 40,000 universe and am always looking for more Xenos lore, but this book suffered from too much Grim Dark. Phil Kelly did a commendable job portraying the Tau and John Banks is a great narrator, but the Space Marines lack depth and are almost comically stereotypical. For a lot of the fans that is exactly what they are looking for, but sadly it wasn’t my cup of tea.
If you’re looking for Tau lore or are really liked other Space Marine novels then definitely pick up this book, but if you’re like me and can’t stand to hear another “For the Emperor!!!!” then give this one a pass.

Non stop action - great dialogue

When i say non stop action i really mean non stop action, with a perfect blend of dialogue in between. The narrator was perfect too had a different voice for each character. One of the best 40k audiobooks ive listened too.

Good intro to the tau empire and their first rendezvous with the imperium. Hated the tau before but this audiobook made me like them.

Good book, very descriptive of the constant battles. Get to hear about tau units and space marines, And even a little about the kroots as well.

Just so

The grim dark future is presented in colorful contrast through the T'au and the Ultramarine conflict. Present are action, drama, and a little humor. Lots of 40k jargon is used to good effect.

Fun book, interesting fantasy world.

I had hoped the battles between the battle suits and the space marines would be more detailed.

good story, but frustrating in the beginning.

I liked the story about mid way through the book, but was very annoyed about certain character traits that the sergeants possessed. also the rate of death sustained by the space Marines made me wonder if they even were wearing armor. other than that it was a great read and I will listen to it again

impressive

Just started playing Warhammer as a Tau player. Lots of battles and easy to comprehend I wish it was longer and more character development but other than that awesome story

Pure action

Loving both ultramarines and the farsight enclaves I found myself struggling on who to root for.
Packed with action between battles suits and assault marines, however, often the same phrases are used throughout and seemed almost repetitive.
Although a logical ending I felt it was a bit lackluster and definitely found the tau side more interesting
Saying this I enjoyed it thoroughly and John Banks narration was superb

Good to hear about the Tau from their perspective rather than just being purged or killed by the ultra smurfs

Ultramarine v Tau

Well written account of Tau v Imperium of man. well read, enjoyable and told from both sides. ultramarines come across as intransigent brutes, unlike other novels.

Loved it from start to finish

I found it gripping, it's my first grimdark novel of any kind. A space marine fan at heart I found myself rooting for each side. An interesting insight into the tau way of life along with vivid and intense battles. I will be relisting to this in the future. A great narrator who brings the characters to life.

Surprisingly good for a Warhammer book

I find most warhammer books tend to just go through the motions, essentially do very similar stories with minute differences and usually containing multiple fights with an enemy that doesn't really have any effect on the story.

This one however was a big surprise, its a Spacemarine book hut it could also be a Tau book, both sides have say in the story and neither is purely good or bad.

The meeting of these two races who play off each other makes for interesting dynamics in both fights and conversations, and the internal struggles of each side also show that these are relatable characters not just copy paste archetypes.

So yes I would recommend this book :)

Brilliant intro to Tau and Farsight

I love most 40k books that I listen to, but may cringe when a story is pro-Imperium. This book is not - it’s great how it tell the story from both sides of the conflict - and I found it quite revealing about Tau civilisation and Farsight especially.

An absolute shocker!

I have listened to a number of 40K novels now but this is, hands down, the worst. I have a fairly high tolerance for junkie sci-fi and while due to their nature, most of the 40K novels have a level of disbelief built in, this was absurd. I listened for the first two hours and had to give in. If you like constant improbable/impossible action yelled at you, you may well enjoy it. Otherwise, be warned.
