Publisher's Summary

When a gentleman arrives at Montalbano's station to report an armed robbery on his wife that ended with a kiss, the inspector's suspicions are aroused. But Montalbano finds that none of the witnesses' stories add up, and he can't help feeling they're not meant to.

Meanwhile there's a case that keeps finding its way back to Montalbano's office. A locked door has appeared on a farmer's disused shed, and then, just as quickly, it disappears. The antiterrorist police intervene, but why are they so keen to keep this away from him? And why does he sense that this case is connected to him somehow?

I tried hard to finish this book...

I tried hard to finish this book but I found the reading impossible to listen to. Ridiculous Italian accents and Italian words incorrectly pronounced - Camilleri deserves better. I'll try to return the book for a refund.

Worth taking the plunge

I have watch the entire collection of Montalbano on DVD and love the series. Living in Malta I have frequently visited Sicily. I was determined to listen to the books, having read the first one a year ago. It took a few minutes to get used to Daniel Philpott reading, and naturally not sounding like Luca Zingaretti, however the story itself just carried me on. Really most enjoyable.

A special end to a complicated story.

A bit more complicated than usual. The story keeps you there suspended before getting to know the truth. Montalbano is feeling on his shoulder the weight of the years passing by. Only in "August heat" I have seen him so lost.
I did not enjoy the performance, not like other ones in other audiobooks I have heard before.

Excellent narration of a great story

This narrator really brings the characters to life. I wish audible would re-record those Montalbano audiobooks which use the other narrator who, for some unimaginable reason, gives everyone a cockney accent! Would be much better.

Great story!

Great story but sometimes struggled with the varying volume of the performance. Admittedly the volume changes did add a lot of life to the story but it was difficult to find the ideal headphones setting!

Montalbano Imagined

Was not sure at first how this would seem after the BBC4 dramatisations. Italian with subtitles appears to work well on screen and the initial reading in English with Italian accents grated a little, but I was gradually won over by Daniel Philpott’s performance.
With a picture of Salvo,Fazio,Mimi,Catarella and others in my mind I began to be transported to Sicily.
The story was a slow burner,as most of these are,but it is the atmosphere and life which captivates.
A gentle read well worth the effort.
