DON'T EXPECT ORDINARY ROMANCE expect EXTRAORDINARY

What did you love best about Black Lies?

What did I love best about Black Lies? IT KEPT ME GUESSING THE WHOLE WAY. At one point, I had a crazy thought, but Allessandra Torre's writing is *so good* with layers of STORY and misdirection that I thought, "Nope, that can't be it". It turned out, my guess was right BUT SHE WROTE IT SO MUCH BETTER THAN I COULD HAVE IMAGINED! There were parts that horrified me, kept me on the edge of my seat, and there were characters I wanted to distance myself from so badly I almost quit the book --- AND THEN --- what you are listening to isn't what you thought it was at all. The twists were awesome. And she wrapped it up so darn nice. That is a big problem for me with some books; the story is great, but if the ending is abrupt I feel like I've been having the ride of my life only to be thrown out of the car before I reach my destination. Really glad that wasn't an issue with this story. I love steamy romance along with Happily Ever Afters and this one delivers that too, yay! I had so much fun with this story, I bought the ebook too and had to go back and read parts going, "Yep, there's a clue, and there's a clue..." NICE!!

What other book might you compare Black Lies to and why?

I don't think I can recall a book quite like Black Lies. It has many elements of suspense but I've yet to find another author who can write erotic romance + HEA (where one of the characters isn't tragically killed off by the bad guy -- authors, you know who you are! ;) plus really nice suspense. And a truly original storyline. The more I think on this book, the more I am impressed.

What about Jessica Almasy’s performance did you like?

She was really good at differentiating voices. Her male voice for Brandt was my favorite. I wish she could have done the book all in that voice. At first, I was thrown off by her odd pacing in Layana's voice, where there were pauses where there shouldn't be and sort of strange emphasis' on some words where it wasn't called for but a few chapters in and I was accustomed. She read fast (I prefer narrators who speak as rapidly as I'd normally be able to read) which I loved very much, and she read clearly, didn't screech or scream (there is one narrator in particular that I fear did my ears permanent damage before I could rip out my earbuds - when the scenes call for a character to scream *it really isn't necessary to DO it, please have mercy on us listeners* Jessica Almasy could go from whisper to "shout" without any pain on the listener end - and her different male character voices were darn impressive

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

YES! But I played it while I was working and stretched it out into two sessions. But I wish I could have stayed up and skipped sleep. It was that good.

Any additional comments?

I wish there were more books to combine romantic erotica with real plot -- this was stellar for me because normally I get my book fixes in patterns: pick up a thriller, pick up a couple sweet romance, pick up a couple erotica books --- and none of these do much for crossover, until this book. I REALLY LIKED THAT! I want to go, "Aww! Sweet!" in the same book that I want to shout, "She DIDN'T!!!! That WITCH!" and "Get him out of there, HURRY!! Before they stab him again!"Hats off author! This was great!!

Horrible

The narrator’s voice is horrible. The story is horrible. It is only about sex nothing about romance.

Great Story. Not the best narrator

This was a great story but it was excruciatingly painful to listen to Lana's voice. I only bore it because the story was interesting and I wanted to hear how it was going to end. I'm impressed with this writer and will read/listen to more from her, just not with this narrator.

Awesome story

I loved the story. As far as the narration...I listen to audiobooks while driving and it seems like the male character voices we're done in almost a whisper compared to the female character voices. I found myself having to turn the volume way up to hear the male characters and then when narration switched to a female character, the volume was blasting. Other than that, I thought the narration was done very well.

Sex, lies, and love

Her life had a plan to marry wealthy. She found a wealthy California playboy who afforded the lifestyle she craved. What she didn’t know until much later was he had a deep dark secret. That secret changed the structure of their relationship. He seemed perfect, yet the black secret caused problems in areas that Lana could no longer control. Her deceit a lie as well. She had a selfish unconditional love for them both.

Narrator:
Jessica Almasy is the solo performer of this erotic story about a wealthy elitist dating two men. I’m not loving her voice or tone for any of the character performances. I tolerated her voice for Brant. While it didn’t measure up to that of a males voice it was better than most other female narrators performances. I didn’t like how Lana’s character was performed speed reading dialogue. There needed more pause between words. Sure I could’ve changed the speed of my audiobook but it didn’t seem as if that would fix the problem.

While I was disappointed by this performance, it no way changed my interest in this story. I’m grateful this performance didn’t hinder my enjoyment of a brilliantly written story with unexpected plot twists.

Overall:
It’s a good thing that I love the writing style of this book. It’s also good I read this book prior to the audiobook book release so I’m privy to the secret. Makes for a more enjoyable journey, however what I am disappointed in is this performance by this narrator. Her voice, sound, and tone were all wrong for me. I do love Alessandra’s dirty mouth and mind. She can write some of the most erotic sex scenes that will make me blush.

Black Lies began with a confusing timeline dating back eight years then three. I hate the reminders of this impending timeline. It made me impatient.

Amazing story

very well written from different perspectives. It kept me interested and wondering what was actually going on through the whole story. The sex scenes made me feel embarrassed to be listening in public even though I had headphones lol they were that good. Refreshing story line with an underlying topic I havent seen anywhere else. Overall i would definitely recommend.

Intriguing Mystery Romance

In true Torre style, this story was not what it seemed. When reading any of her books, you have to pay close attention to plot and all its components. Even then, there will alwYs be elements that will sneak up on you and completely take you by surprise. if you've not read it, I suggest you do.

I wasn't too thrilled with the narrator of this story at first, as the voice did not speak to me. Over the course of the book the narrators animated retelling and ability to distinguish between each of the characters became an asset.
