Story
In the old world there were many rules. In the new world there is only one: don't open your eyes. In the 17 years since the 'creatures' appeared, many people have broken that rule. Many have looked. Many have lost their minds, their lives, their loved ones. In that time, Malorie has raised her two children - Olympia and Tom - on the run or in hiding. Now nearly teenagers, survival is no longer enough. They want freedom.

Story
Once every year, Scoutmaster Tim Riggs leads a troop of boys into the Canadian wilderness for a weekend camping trip - a tradition as comforting and reliable as a good ghost story around a roaring bonfre. The boys are a tight-knit crew. There’s Kent, one of the most popular kids in school; Ephraim and Max, also well-liked and easygoing; then there’s Newt the nerd and Shelley the odd duck. For the most part, they all get along and are happy to be there - which makes Scoutmaster Tim’s job a little easier.

Story
It all happened so quickly. First, animals became infected with the virus and their meat became poisonous. Then, governments initiated the Transition. Now, 'special meat' - human meat - is legal. Marcos is in the business of slaughtering humans, only no one calls them that. He works with numbers, consignments, processing. One day, he's given a gift to seal a deal: a specimen of the finest quality. He leaves her in his barn, tied up, a problem to be disposed of later. But the specimen haunts Marcos. Her trembling body, her eyes that watch him, that seem to understand.

In the darkness of an underground cave, blind creatures hunt by sound. Then there is light, voices, and they feed.... Swarming from their prison, the creatures thrive; to whisper is to summon death. Story
The Zombie War came unthinkably close to eradicating humanity. Max Brooks, driven by the urgency of preserving the acid-etched firsthand experiences of the survivors from those apocalyptic years, traveled across the United States of America and throughout the world, from decimated cities that once teemed with upwards of thirty million souls to the most remote and inhospitable areas of the planet. He recorded the testimony of men, women, and sometimes children who came face-to-face with the living - or at least the undead - hell of that dreadful time.

Misery Chastain was dead. Paul Sheldon had just killed her - with relief, with joy. Misery had made him rich; she was the heroine of a string of best sellers. And now he wanted to get on to some real writing. That's when the car accident happened, and he woke up in pain in a strange bed. But it wasn't the hospital. Annie Wilkes had pulled him from the wreck, brought him to her remote mountain home, splinted and set his mangled legs. The good news was that Annie was a nurse and had painkilling drugs. The bad news was that she was Paul's Number One Fan.

Story
This is the story of four sisters Grimm - daughters born to different mothers on the same day, each born out of bright-white wishing and black-edged desire. They found each other at eight years-old, were separated at 13, and now, at nearly 18, it is imperative that they find each other once again. In 33 days they will meet their father in Everywhere. Only then will they discover who they truly are and what they can truly do. Then they must fight to save their lives and the lives of the ones they love. Three will live, one will die. You’ll have to read on to find out who and why....
Publisher's Summary
Most people ignored the outrageous reports on the news. But they became too frequent, they became too real. And soon, they began happening down the street. Then the Internet died. The television and radio went silent. The phones stopped ringing. And we couldn't look outside anymore.
Malorie raises the children the only way she can; indoors. The house is quiet. The doors are locked, the curtains are closed, mattresses are nailed over the windows. They are out there. She might let them in. The children sleep in the bedroom across the hall. Soon she will have to wake them. Soon she will have to blindfold them. Today they must leave the house. Today they will risk everything.

Hooked from the first. I had to keep listening. I had to finish. Katherine Mangold did justice to a brilliant idea. She read with an intuitive idea of each character. It was well worth the just over 7 hours I spent on listening to this story. Do yourself a favour. Listen too.

Different Take on an Apocolyptic Tale.
I really liked this... I wanted to listen before I watched the film. The book is (as always) so much better than the book. The narrator in this instance does a great job.. I was with her all the way. great variations in the characters voices and believable!!
I love the way the writer takes us on the journey, I felt I was there all the way.. I don't want to say to much as I’m aware of spoilers. Great novel, Great characters, Great story and a really interesting take on the end of the world as we know it... I've an Apocolyptic addiction and this hit the spot.

Intriguing horror with a sub par performance
I’m not saying the narrator is bad. She is not. However she brings nothing to the table, and does nothing to enhance the experience. Often sounding fed up, or bored with the material, she makes no effort to portray the emotions, tone, nuances of the characters dialogue. This story has tremendous potential for a narrator to bring the story to life, yet Catharine Mangold misses the mark so frequently during tense or exciting moments that it often becomes tedious. I was surprised to find out she is an actor. Well Miss Mangold, I beg to differ! Otherwise, a thoroughly enjoyable story with plenty of suspense and subtle horror. For all of you that complain that nothing happens, I recommend a closer examination of the story, or failing that, go back to your jump scare driven, subtle as a brick to the dome - shock horror, and stop review bombing fine literature just because you lack an imagination and thus the capacity to appreciate the understated. I truly pity you.

Disappointing in so many ways
Didn't enjoy this at all. The narration was fine but the story was full of holes. The premise was promising enough - some sort of "phenomenon" that seems to devastate the whole world - but the author never really gets into what or why. I got the feeling that he just didn't have the answer so just avoided it. Plenty of speculation from the various characters, but I would have liked more depth on what actually happened and how the human race could prevail. I didn't feel any sense of dread and didn't care what happened to any of the characters. I mostly left waiting for ANYTHING to happen to move the story along. It wasn't horror, it wasn't scary, it wasn't creepy and the ending was just frustrating.

I am totally gripped!
What a great horror/psychological suspense novel.
It is a chilling story! As the world as we know it falls prey to an apocalyptic plague of suicidal, murderous behaviour triggered by glimpsing an unknown creature, Malorie must do all she can to survive. DO NOT OPEN YOUR EYES!
I have half an hour left until the end of the book and I don't want it to end! It is so gripping and will have you on the edge of your seat with anxiety for the characters involved.

Chilling, Captivating, Unforgettable.
"You are saving their lives for a life not worth living."
💛 Bird Box grabbed me and didn’t let go 'til it was good and done with me.
💚 The concept alone is brilliantly inventive, but the execution is utterly captivating. Malorie's choices, her challenges, felt like my own. I stepped into her shoes and experienced every horror and every dilemma.
💜 It raises so many questions about when life stops becoming worth it for the sake of living. The children in particular become symbolic of this. I didn't always like Malorie or her decisions, but I rooted for her, heart in my throat, at every step.
❤️️ And as a bonus, there’s a sequel. A GOOD sequel. Malorie.

SOUNDBITE
🎧 Katharine Mangold delivers a masterful portrayal of Malorie, showcasing her doubts, hopes and fears with simple inflections. The production is just what it needs to be - wistful, expressive, claustrophobic, moving - and all the because its simplicity allows her performance to shine.

Highly recommend for anyone who enjoys cosmic horror!
I spoiled this for myself by watching the movie first, it’s one of my favs does overshadow this book a bit for me. While the book is really well done, it doesn’t quite have the level of world building the movie managed to achieve.
I did really enjoy it though, the writing is very blunt but carries a lot of emotion. I’m also kind of obsessed with Malorie and her strength, I could never.

Gloomy post-apocalyptic tale.
A grim listen, as a not-to-be-viewed entity/ force drives people insane if they do see it and society violently falls apart. An original and imaginative tale with, at times, some hard to sympathize with characters. Well narrated.
