Publisher's Summary

Sir Tony Robinson is a much-loved actor, presenter and author with a stellar career lasting over 50 years. Now, in his long-awaited autobiography, he reveals how the boy from South Woodford went from child stardom in the first stage production of Oliver!, a pint-size pickpocket desperately bleaching his incipient moustache, to comedy icon Baldrick, the loyal servant and turnip aficionado in Blackadder.

It wasn't all plain sailing, though. Along the way he was bullied by Steve Marriott, failed to impress Liza Minnelli and was pushed into a stinking London dock by John Wayne. He also entertained us with Maid Marion and Her Merry Men (which he wrote and starred in) and coped manfully when locked naked outside a theatre in Lincoln during the live tour of comedy series Who Dares Wins. He presented Time Team for 20 years, watching countless gardens ruthlessly dug up in the name of archaeology, and risked life and limb filming The Worst Jobs in History.

Packed full of incident and insight, No Cunning Plan is a funny, self-deprecating and always entertaining listen.

More than Baldrick

Great book, very interesting and read beautifully. I loved it. Highly recommended as an educated audio read.

Well done, Balders!

The book offers an intimate insight into the life and experiences of a well known and admired person. He knows how to tell a story and it is as if you are sitting with him at the pub as he regales you with his reminiscences. Some of the stories seem a bit far fetched but somehow I had no doubt they were true! Sometimes his ego was a bit more prominent than I thought it would be, as he always seems so humble in interviews, but he probably deserves to boast a bit after all he has achieved. I loved Robinson’s narration of some of the Terry Pratchett books and it seems he is even better when narrating his own.

Disillusioned

In the fewest words possible, some things I just didn't want to know.

I was introduced to Tony through his stories about Fat Tulip and Maid Marion. I've seen one or two of his documentaries and of course Time Team, but my appreciation for his narrative powers is always my first expectation from him.

Unfortunately, for all his wonderful experiences, he was also up front about the faults: drugs and cheating on wife and/or girlfriend. Is it too much to ask for a celebrity/idol who is clean and faithful????

I'm afraid I won't be able to forget this and now my expectations will be tarnished: any time I see him come on tv I think what once might have been bated breath I might now sigh in recollection of a lost innocence.

For the autobiography itself, well written although a little all over the place time-wise. Couldn't keep straight what period he was talking about.

A Passionate Man

I've only watched a little Blackadder and a few episodes of Time Team, but knowing more about Tony I want to rectify that.
highly recommend

Very interesting and well told

Amazing story telling, as you might expect. I enjoyed how varied it was, which is true to life. I was hungry for more when it came to Blackadder, but I think that’s acceptable.

The many faces of Tony Robinson

Tony's lilting voice draws you in from the first word, loved this book, had me from the start.

Should have pinned a tail on it...

A story of Tony's sexual exploits!!
Boring mostly, for someone not 'into theatre'.
Reminder of how sanctimonious the politics of the left are.
As much as I love Tony's comedy work, this didn't leave me yearning to meet him.
Some great tales, but the theatre politics shit went on.
Typical socialist waffle.
Sorry Tones
much love

Disappointing

With a title like ‘No Cunning Plan’ I expected this book to be full of behind the scenes stories of Tony’s famous characters and TV shows. Instead it is a droll book that delves more into local politics than it does Blackadder, or any other of the things he is better known for.

No Cunning Plan

What a wonderful life you’ve led Sir Tony Robinson! It was really interesting to hear how you embarked on your acting career and kept at it even with the many setbacks you encountered. I had no idea you were so involved politically and a little ironic that I finished the book this morning on my way to work and then heard that you had resigned from the Labour Party 3 days ago after 45 years!!! Your close encounters with Altzheimers was particularly moving and I will definitely be looking for the film about your mother’s experiences. I highly recommend this book as an informative, entertaining and brilliantly performed life story.
