Publisher's Summary

In the early 1930s, Nancy Wake was a young woman enjoying a bohemian life in Paris. By the end of the Second World War, she was the Gestapo's most wanted person. As a naive, young journalist, Nancy Wake witnessed a horrific scene of Nazi violence in a Viennese street. From that moment, she declared that she would do everything in her power to rid Europe of the Nazis.

What began as a courier job here and there became a highly successful escape network for Allied soldiers, perfectly camouflaged by Nancy's high-society life in Marseille. Her network was soon so successful – and so notorious – that she was forced to flee France to escape the Gestapo, who had dubbed her 'the white mouse' for her knack of slipping through its traps. But Nancy was a passionate enemy of the Nazis and refused to stay away.

Supplying weapons and training members of a powerful underground fighting force, organising Allied parachute drops, cycling four hundred kilometres across a mountain range to find a new transmitting radio – nothing seemed too difficult in her fight against the Nazis. Peter FitzSimons reveals Nancy Wake's compelling story, a tale of an ordinary woman doing extraordinary things.

Not authors best

Boring. Too much of Nancy’s views & not enough independent research by author. I’ve read 5 other of his books. This was the least good of them.

Extraordinary. 🐭 #TheWhiteMouse

This book that documents the incredible life of the hugely brave, beautiful & bold Nancy Wake who’s story is humbling beyond words and fills me with deep gratitude for the many things I take for granted as a young Australian who’s never known anything but peace is one of my new favourites as it is very vital. Highly recommended.

Enjoyed it.

I really enjoyed this book and its narration. I'd heard of the White Mouse, but no further details. An astounding character, of the type who wins wars.
I am horrified that Australia was so late to honour her decently.
I did get a feeling that these were reflections from much later in Nancy's life, by the way many memories were summed with "I just loved it " or "they were wonderful" and similar. Some details I found back in obituaries and other news reports.
Nevertheless, I learned a lot and stood in awe.

What a lady

A great Australian. A unbelievable life. Would be better if FitzSimons researchers get a nod as they the bulk of the work.

A great read

Well researched and written. I appreciated that the narrator is a woman telling a woman's story. She did an excellent job, especially with all the French pronunciations.
