Publisher's Summary

The year was 1915. Equipment and food supplies were totally inadequate. After battling its way for six weeks through thousands of miles of pack ice and located only a day's sail from its destination, the Endurance became locked inside an island of ice. Yet Ernest Shackleton enabled all 27 of his men to survive for over a year on the ice-bound Antarctic seas - leadership without equal. This gripping account is based on contemporaneous diaries and interviews conducted by the author with these exceptional men.

Shackleton's Transantarctic Expedition

This is a perennial favorite heroic age tale. I am always amazed at how everyone survived this ordeal.

Absolutely magnificent

This has to be one of the all time best stories of adventure and survival. Wonderfully narrated too.

The storey of an exceptional journey

I vaguely knew this story of the exceptional leadership and endurance of Ernest Shackleton.
This book is so much more, giving life to all the men who share their thoughts and fears in their daily diaries
The narration is exceptional, I felt I travelled with them.

A staggering tale, well written and read.

I had heard the basics of the story before, but this book really bought home just how amazing and incredible the journey was.

My only criticism is that it would be nice to hear what happened afterwards, but that is a minor point.

Captivating True Heroic

The voice is just right for 1914.
The story is of extraordinary and steadfast survival against all manner of obstacles and incidents.
I would not have liked to miss this rendition of normal men made great by the force of unfortunate circumstance and the will to help each other to live through an appalling accident of nature.

Very inspiring

A story that needs to told. Got so into the story that spent countless hours researching this expedition and the amazing people involved. Shekelton should be used as an example in those management books
