Publisher's Summary

Audie Award, Narration by Author, 2016

Raised by unconventional Irish Catholics who knew "how to drink, how to dance, how to talk, and how to stir up the devil", Kate Mulgrew grew up with poetry and drama in her bones. But in her mother, a would-be artist burdened by the endless arrival of new babies, young Kate saw the consequences of a dream deferred. Determined to pursue her own no matter the cost, at 18 she left her small Midwestern town for New York, where, studying with the legendary Stella Adler, she learned the lesson that would define her as an actress: "Use it," Adler told her. Whatever disappointment, pain, or anger life throws in your path, channel it into the work.

It was a lesson she would need. At 22, just as her career was taking off, she became pregnant and gave birth to a daughter. Having already signed the adoption papers, she was allowed only a fleeting glimpse of her child. As her star continued to rise, her life became increasingly demanding and fulfilling, a whirlwind of passionate love affairs, life-saving friendships, and bone-crunching work. Through it all Mulgrew remained haunted by the loss of her daughter until, two decades later, she found the courage to face the past and step into the most challenging role of her life both on and off screen.

We know Kate Mulgrew for the strong women she's played - Captain Janeway on Star Trek; the tough-as-nails Red on Orange Is the New Black. Now we meet the most inspiring and memorable character of all: herself. By turns irreverent and soulful, laugh-out-loud funny and heart-piercingly sad, Born with Teeth is the breathtaking memoir of a woman who dares to live life to the fullest, on her own terms.

Outstanding story and narration

I think all the other reviews have it spot on but this memoir was so addictive and surprising, it was an absolute delight to devour! And because I’m late on finding this book, i discover i can now follow it with her second book about her parents!

Absolutely riveting command performance

Being a massive Star Trek fan the Voyager series was right up my alley and having watched Kate in that series and in Orange is the New Black as Red, I was immediately motivated to listen to this book. I listen to most books nowadays as I do long drives by myself and reading is something I have loved all my life. I think this is honestly the best audio book I have ever listened to. The story is captivating and Kate's narration is outstanding. I have never been into memoirs or autobiographies but Kate drew me in and made me feel like we were having a chat between friends. Just wow!

Based on other reviews I'd hoped for more.

I didn't find Kate Mulgrew engaging as Captain Janeway but I was hoping this book would give me more appreciation for her. Unfortunately it didn't. Parts of her life were interesting, but overall I found her self-absorbed and privileged. I finished the book because I wanted to know the outcome of the main story point, but otherwise probably wouldn't have.

Brilliant and so moving!

Having your favourite star trek Captain read her work is phenomenal! The story is eye opening and weaves a beautiful and powerful tale. I had no idea she'd been through so much.

Kate Mulgrew - Legendary

I had long been a fan of Star Trek the original series I was allowed to watch as a child. Later I avidly watched Patrick Stewart as Jean Luc Picard and just as avidly loved the next generation. Then I heard of a new series with a female Captain and I was so excited, from the first episode I was hooked and the person holding the rod was Kate Mulgrew. I am
So glad that I listened to this book, to hear of her life, her family and her loves. The tragedies she endured as a woman and her triumph as an actor. This was the best 10 hours of my life being able to understand and enjoy the stories beautifully narrated by the very talented Kate Mulgrew.

Perfect Title, stubborn and brilliant, like Kate!

Loved it, Kate's voice is what made it, demanding and soothing as always. Infuriatingly not enough to begin to explain how Kate's personal and professional uniqueness came to be. I want more, more detail, so have immediately purchased 'How to forget' also on audible. Laughed out loud on crowded buses at the interview with Rosie O'Donnel included like a treat at the end, a great dessert!
