Publisher's Summary

Big Lies in a Small Town, by the internationally best-selling author Diane Chamberlain, is a sweeping novel about two women connected by a painting that holds many dark secrets.

North Carolina, 2018: Morgan Christopher’s life has been derailed. Taking the fall for a crime she did not commit, she finds herself serving a three-year stint in the North Carolina Women’s Correctional Centre. Her dream of a career in the arts is put on hold - until a mysterious visitor makes her an offer that will see her released immediately. Her assignment: restore an old post office mural in a sleepy southern town. Morgan knows nothing about art restoration, but, desperate to leave prison, she accepts. What she finds under the layers of grime is a painting that tells the story of madness, violence and a conspiracy of small-town secrets.

North Carolina, 1940: Anna Dale, an artist from New Jersey, wins a national contest to paint a mural for the post office in Edenton, North Carolina. Alone in the world and desperate for work, she accepts. But what she doesn’t expect is to find herself immersed in a town where prejudices run deep, where people are hiding secrets behind closed doors and where the price for being different might just end in murder.

What happened to Anna Dale? Are the clues hidden in the decrepit mural? Can Morgan overcome her own demons to discover what exists beneath the layers of lies?

Critic Reviews

"Fans of Jodi Picoult’s style will love how Diane Chamberlain writes." (Candis)

"Narrator Susan Bennett offers a moving performance of this multilayered story of two women whose lives are affected by a New Deal art mural. Portraying Morgan, Bennett's voice has a tone of artistic sensitivity. When Anna's life spirals out of control, she adds feverish intensity. For the locals, Bennett superbly delivers a languid Southern drawl. Overall, Bennett adds an exciting dimension to a gripping story of racism, madness, murder, and even romance." (J.E.S, AudioFile)

Good read

Felt a bit rushed towards the end despite this a real page turner. Wished it were a little longer or at least went into more detail regarding characters.

Beautifully written, beautifully read

Without a doubt Diane Chamberlain is one of my favourite authors! I was first introduced to her and the narrator Susan Bennett with a daily deal a few weeks ago called the Dream daughter. On finishing that i sought out more of her books - there are lots 😃happy me.
This story is on a par with that daily deal. I found it very difficult to stop listening and tried to limit myself. Without success 😂
An absolute must read 10/10

Big Lies in a small town - Bursting with Mystery!

Diane Chamberlin is one my most favourite authors to date. I had eagerly waited for Big lies in a small town, my fourth audible listen by her to be released and delivered after pre ordering weeks back.

I have just finished listening and have to say that Diane has so cleverly written such a gripping and captivating story, delivered across a dual timeline that interweaves the two main characters of Anna Dale and Morgan Christopher.

Sally Bennett once again narrating for Diane’s new novel is the most perfect choice. Sally’s polished and pitch perfect narration brings the story bursting to life, so that you feel you are there with the characters observing as the story cleverly unravels.

I highly recommend to all and feel you will not be disappointed. My hope now I have finished listening is that Diane Chamberlin will go on to write a sequel, as I feel there is further chapters to be told of Morgan’s journey ahead.
