La storia racconta che in una giornata d'inverno una regina, mentre è intenta a cucire vicino a una finestra, si punge un dito e, guardando le gocce di sangue sul terreno innevato, esprime il desiderio di avere una figlia con i capelli scuri come l'ebano, la pelle bianca come la neve e le labbra rosse come il sangue; dopo qualche tempo la regina ha una bambina, alla quale dà il nome Biancaneve. Nel darla alla luce la regina la bacia sulla bocca. Poco tempo dopo la regina, colpita da una grave malattia, muore prematuramente...
