Publisher's Summary

On 9/11, firefighter Nick Fletcher's world changed forever. He's unable to rid himself of survivor's guilt, made worse by the secret he hides from his family and coworkers. Nick's life is centered around helping burn victims until he is reunited with the man he once loved but pushed away.

For fashion designer Julian Cornell, appearances mean everything. His love affairs are strictly casual, and the only thing he cares about is making his clothing line a success. A chance encounter with the man he loved long ago has Julian thinking for the first time in years there may be more to life than being seen at the best parties and what designer labels to wear.

When Julian's world takes an unexpected turn, it's Nick who helps him regain perspective on what matters most in life. Julian, in turn, helps Nick accept who he is and understand he isn't responsible for tragedies he couldn't prevent. Lost love found can be even sweeter the second time around, and after all the years apart, both men learn to look beyond the surface to find the men they are inside.

Contains mature themes.

A Story of Reconnection

This may be my favorite piece yet by Stevens. It's about how two characters reconnect after so much time and are able to bring back the best in each other. It's about how two characters find love after so much time, and it's about how they are able to find new meaning with each other. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to it. There's the right balance of smut and romance, and I loved some of the secondary characters. I would be willing to try to the second part of this series, as I want to see how this group of characters grows and changes.

Narration.......

I feel a little odd posting this review amongst all the listeners who've expressed love for this book and its narration. I thought the concept and plot of the story held a lot of potential; heavy emotional and societal burdens create very engaging internal and external conflict for both protagonists, but I simply could not finish this. Why? The narration. Was. Terrible. I felt as though I was listening to a robot dictating the text; the narrator did a poor job of delivering dialogue that was in sync with the emotional context, and his attempts at accent changes grated on my nerves; Bachmann just wasn't made to narrate Brooklyn accents.

I feel like I've been inordinately harsh in this review, but that's my two cents. If you can make it past the irritating narration, the story is pretty good.

Loved Every Minute.

Perfection. In every word, inflection and feeling. Loved the heartaches and the coming back to each other Nick and Julian went through. Needed to go through in order to become the people they wanted to be for themselves and each other.

A box of tissue please

Listening to this book bring joy, hope, laughter, worries, and tears to me. This book bring two love souls together giving them a second chance at love. The road these two took while they’re apart will make you cry. But the happy endings is also rewarded with much love, hope, and more tears. Listening to this book requires a box of tissue.

Sweet Story

I liked this story and the narration was good. If you're looking for a great deal of heart-wrenching tension (I'm not), this book may not be for you. There are no major twists, and any conflict that occurred during the book is resolved in the end.

I'm a sucket for a second chance romance.

I love second chance romances, especially when it's a story that reunites 2 long lost loves who should have been together all along. Sadly, Nick and Julien spent way too many years apart due to Nick's insecurities. But luckily, an unexpected encounter brought them back together and all was right in the world!

Well okay, it wasn't quite that easy! Before they could even think of having any kind of relationship, Nick had to take a good hard look in the mirror and decide what he wanted out of life, what he wanted his life to look like, what he wanted to have with Julien. He'd been hiding his true self for so long that his whole world was going to be upended once he started living his truth.

Both Nick and Julien grew a lot in this book. For Nick it was mostly personal, which overflowed into his professional life. For Julien, it was professionally. I really liked the change Julien went through. I think any of us, having the opportunity he had, would have done the same thing. He didn't give up his life's dream, he just expanded on it and made it into something that had more meaning than what he had been doing.

I always enjoy books that feature a group of friends, and those friends play a significant part in each story. Julien has a couple of terrific people in his corner, in Marcus and Zach, although Marcus is quite the handful! You can tell how important they are to each other and I just loved that. It was nice to see how much they worried about Julien, but were more than willing to give Nick a chance.

Julien and Nick's love story was one a long time in the making, but so worth it!

not my favorite

The story was okay, not my favorite. There is a weird time progression issue. one minute it's 10am then a drive home, a romp in the hay and then it's late at night suddenly. Just jarring and odd how scenes move from one to the next.
I had heard a narration by Mr Bachman before and didn't realize he narrated this book before I got it. I previously did not care for his performance but he did a great job here. Accents were realistic, great cadence and lovely distinctive voices for all characters.
