Publisher's Summary

Erich Tellier died. Then, he came back to life....

On the night of a long-awaited comet sighting, Erich, a university student, comes back from the dead. Making a miraculous recovery after a horrific car accident, he quickly returns to his musical studies and seems to have a new zest for life. Though he mingles with his fellow students and dedicates himself to his work, those close to him can't help but notice something is wrong, however.

Very wrong.

Erich isn't himself anymore. His personality has changed radically, and where he was once a middling musician, he's suddenly and unaccountably developed a virtuosic talent. He spends his nights awake, walking the streets or throwing lavish parties.

What's more, those who spend time alone with him tend to go insane.

Amid a string of suicides and government conspiracies, the denizens of Moorlake, Ohio find themselves at the center of a blossoming cosmic horror. If they don't find out who - or what - Erich Tellier has become, the horror is bound to spread beyond the confines of their quiet college town.

Beyond is a supernatural thriller by Ambrose Ibsen.

Super Weird...

In a good way! I liked that Ambrose Ibsen did something that was disparate to what he normally does, that aspect was particularly fun for me. 'Beyond' is about a bunch of college students who get wrapped up in a weird series of happenings that occur around a long-awaited comet sighting including death, reanimation, madness, car accidents, conspiracy theories, poetry, and more. It's hard to say more without spoilers, so I won't! But I will say that Joe Hempel delivers a phenomenal performance in this one, which is something I've come to expect from him! He never lets me down. I'd recommend this book to friends who enjoy weird, out-there supernatural stories. I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator, or publisher.

Beyond The Grave

Have been a fan of Ambrose Ibsen for a while. He definitely has a style that works very well, occasionally he strays from his norm and it is amazing to see how reviews are either love or hate. I think this story exemplifies his ability to write a different kind of story while sticking to the same style and tone that we have come to know and love from his haunted stories. I actually think this could have gone a bit further down the rabbit hole and pushed everything a bit further and still have come out a great story. I enjoyed how the plot played out. Had enough of the horror/supernatural element that are consistent in Ibesn’s stories, but also had a mystery conspiracy angle that I really enjoyed. Again, I would have been happier if the book were a bit longer and that whole angle was explored a bit more. To me it just quenched my thirst enough that I wasn’t parched anymore, but could have had some more to drink. The ending was not quite where I saw the story going, but looking back I think it made total sense and couldn’t have gone any other way. The characters were good. There really are only a few that you get to meet consistently, but I liked how they interacted. The tension between Erich and Julian was great and I loved what seemed to be a cat and mouse game between the two of them. The tinfoil hat wearing Brock, was probably favorite as I like the good ol’ conspiracy nut. I thought that there was a clear difference in the type of characters in this story that worked well with the way the plot was laid out. The Ibsen – Hempel team is fantastic. The two work very well together and between Hempel’s fantastic narration and Ibsen’s ability to create tension, I couldn’t stop listening. Hempel provided, as always, a narration that brings you into the story and provides the right amount of emotion and personality to each character. I was super excited to start this book and now that I’m done I can’t wait for the next. I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator, or publisher.

Just didn't click for me.

Generally I'm a fan of Ambrose Ibsen's work, but this one just didn't connect for me. It's an interesting story and I liked the premise, and the opening was intriguing, but in the end this one just didn't click for me. I never connected with any of the characters. Also with Abrose's work I'm used to a growing sense of dread as the story progresses, but that didn't happen for me this time around. Joe Hempel does his typical excellent job. I was given a free review copy of this audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

Solid supernatural story

For the first hour or so, I wasn’t too sure about Beyond by Ambrose Ibsen. However, the longer I listened, the more I realized I was lost in the story. I had to listen, even if it was just to know what really happened. So, I ended up listening to this into the late night. It isn’t down in the horror genre, it’s listed as a super natural thriller, I think this is important to note. It is definitely not horror. I didn’t find it scary like a lot of Mr. Ibsen’s ghost stories or horror books. But since this isn’t listed that way, I wasn’t expecting to be scared. I was expecting “fringe” talk. That’s just what I got! I enjoyed it and found it a decent story. I found the characters easy to relate to and pretty likable… an unlikely duo forms and I like it. I don’t quite understand the cover relating to the story but whatever. It’s not hugely important and doesn’t really relate to my review but I do like the well-rounded package. The narrator, Joe Hempel is one of my favorite male narrators. I feel he is really underutilized. He has an extreme talent to sound very factual but to also sound like the man in a romance book. He can cross genres very easily if wanted or needed. He was a great fit for Beyond. He was able to play the confused college student seeking answers flawlessly. I always enjoy his narrations no matter what he’s reading to me, that right there is a talent in itself!!

Hackneyed Drivel

Melodramatic dialogue and bland characters combined with a tepid plot and an oversimplified ending. Ugh.

Meh

As a fan of both Ambrose Ibsen and Joe Hempel, I have to say, this wasn't their best work. It was anticlimactic and predictable, the story lacked the meat his earlier work has. Joe tried his hand at an accent, which was also mediocre and his performance was a bit lackluster. The premise had such potential but it feels like it was written in a rush. It was a bit disappointing to have a unique premise relying upon tropes.

Slacker Erich

Erich dies in a car crash but somehow comes back. A fellow student is sent to check on him and instantly knows something is wrong. Something is different. Slacker Erich is no long a slacker and in fact, he's smart and super talented. Or is he? that is the majority of the book. These characters are not that interesting and it's fairly easy to guess what has happened. All the weird things including Erich's crash happened when this super old and rare comet passed the earth. I didn't care for this story or the characters and it was predictable. The narrator, Joe Hempel, did a great job with it. I always enjoy his voice.

Another great Ibsen novel with a twist

I have read so many books written by Ambrose Ibsen and am never disappointed. I certainly hope I will listen to many more in the future. The author has an amazing way of telling tales of the paranormal/ supernatural and downright weird. This story felt a little bit slower than previous novels I have read but I'm so glad I kept with it . I thought I knew which way this story was going and was shocked when I found out that there was a twist . If you havent read any Ambrose Ibsen books before I recommend you try one . I was given this book by the author/narrator in return for an honest and unbiased review
