Publisher's Summary

One terrible case always haunted detective Matt Ballard. Now many years later, the killer seems to be back. And this time he's after Matt.

When Matt Ballard was starting out his career, three boys were murdered in the same area, the remote and bleak Gibbet Fen. When the main suspect was killed in a hit-and-run, the killings stopped. But Matt was not satisfied that the real murderer had been caught.

Over 25 years later, Matt gets a photo in an unmarked envelope. It's of the Gibbet Fen crime scene. And the picture was taken before the murder took place. More photos arrive, relating to the historic murders, as well as intimate pictures of Matt's very secret private life.

Then another murder happens, with some of the hallmarks of the old case. Has the killer returned, or is this just a sick copycat determined to ruin Matt's life and reputation?

Unconvincing

The author writes as a male detective and it doesn't translate. I've not worked in the police but the voice of the main and supporting characters do not ring true. I persisted all the way through however the storyline just didn't land for me. This is the second of the authors books I've tried and I won't be reading any more.

Awful narration and very cringeworthy in places

An ok story but very cringeworthy in places - not helped whatsoever by some of the worst narration and attempt at accents (especially welsh) that I have ever heard! I have enjoyed the previous series by Joy Ellis but I don’t think Matt Ballard has anything on the others. Will give the second one ago purely because a different narrator but I’m not holding my breath!

Intriguing

Brilliantly written suspense filled with a touch of love. I was captivated to find out the identity of the tormentor and Ellis didn’t fail to deliver with a surprise.
Well performed and most enjoyable, highly recommend

Good book, hard to listen to

Another great book by Joy Ellis but ruined by poor narration. The MS Word read aloud feature has more dynamic range than this narrator. Was quite distracting and spoiled the enjoyment I usually get from Elllis’s books.

Great curveball

Didn’t see that twist coming for a second. Very good. Very gripping, and very well performed.

I love Joy Ellis but, this one need to be read not heard

Bad narration ruins a good story. It’s such a shame as joy Ellis is a fantastic writer. It would be great if this one was recorded again with a different narrator, I tried so hard to get into it. He is so wooden and over the top

Disappointed

The narration let the team down. The gratuitous bedroom depictions did not enhance the story line at all.
