 Der Biotechnologe Jack steigt aus dem Helikopter, die flirrende Hitze nimmt ihm schier den Atem. Vor ihm liegt mitten in der Wüste von Nevada die Forschungsstation der Firma Xymos. Das weltweit agierende Nanotechnologie-Unternehmen stellt im Auftrag des Pentagons Miniaturkameras für die Kriegsführung her, die auf der Struktur von Bakterien aufbauen. Aber dem Forscherteam ist bei der Produktion ein folgenreicher Fehler unterlaufen. Über Wochen hinweg entwichen mutierte Mikroroboter aus dem Labor durch ein nur unzureichend abgedichtetes Lüftungsrohr in die Wüste.

Jack, der das Computerprogramm entwickelt hat, mit dem Xymos arbeitet, soll retten, was noch zu retten ist. Denn die Partikel lassen sich nicht mehr kontrollieren. Sie finden sich zu einem Schwarm zusammen, der in immer neuen Kampfformationen zunächst nur Kaninchen und Kojoten, schließlich auch Menschen jagt, sie tötet oder - schlimmer noch - in ihnen weiterlebt und nach und nach alle Zellen ersetzt! Mit der Zeit erkennt Jack, dass die Forscher seinen Kampf gegen die Killerwolke zu behindern versuchen. Warum nur ignorieren seine vermeintlichen Mitstreiter die Tragweite des Produktionsfehlers? Langsam dämmert ihm die furchtbare Wahrheit...
