Der Beginn des ersten Weltkrieges zerstörte die Illusion von der westlichen Welt als eine Gemeinschaft von Kulturvölkern. Die Erkenntnis, dass die Kulturleistungen in ihrem Verhältnis zum primitiv gebliebenen Triebleben des Menschen überschätzt werden, dass das primitive Seelische im vollsten Sinne unvergänglich ist und dass es mehr Kulturheuchler gibt, die ihre Triebe in Friedenszeiten unterdrücken, als wirklich kulturelle Menschen zeigte dieser unvorstellbar grausame "Waffengang" der zivilisierten Welt. Als Folge des Krieges mit seinen unvermeidlichen Toten verschob sich auch der konventionelle Umgang des Menschen mit dem Tod. Durch den Krieg erhielt der Tod Einzug in die Gesellschaft; der Tod wurde allgegenwärtig und trat aus dem Unbewussten heraus.
