Die Bewertung der Kindheit unterliegt in der Psychologie heftigen Trendschwankungen. Lange Zeit schien es klar zu sein: Alle Probleme und Störungen haben ihre Ursache in den ersten Lebensjahren. Dann folgte ein Umdenken. Inspiriert durch die Resilienzforschung gingen viele Experten nun davon aus, dass gute spätere Erfahrungen schlechte frühere wieder ausgleichen können. Außerdem bemängelte man, dass der Blick früherer Forscher immer nur auf Menschen mit seelischen Störungen gerichtet war, die tatsächlich oft in der Kindheit unter Lieblosigkeit, Gewalt oder Verlust gelitten hatten. Bei ganz normalen Biografien sei die Kindheit dagegen genauso bedeutend wie die Pubertät, eine große Liebe oder eine verletzende Scheidung. Fortan galt die Prägung durch die frühe Kindheit als Mythos.
