In Augsburg zur Welt gekommen, verbrachte er dort auch seine Kindheit und Schulzeit, bevor er nach München und später nach Berlin ging. Von dort aus vor allem entfaltete sich sein Ruhm, hauptsächlich als Theatermann, der Stücke schrieb, inszenierte und sich auch theoretisch immer wieder äußerte.
