Publisher's Summary
The stand-up comedian of his generation. Star of stage and screen. Tireless supporter of charity. Runner. Political campaigner. Fashion icon. Human. There is no one quite like Eddie Izzard. This is the story of how a boy who wanted to become a professional footballer and win the lead in Joseph and His Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat found comedy.
Affecting, witty and nothing less than rousing, listeners will, as Eddie himself says, 'look at my life and say, "If that idiot transvestite can run a whole bunch of marathons, play the Hollywood Bowl, and travel across France with a French-speaking tour, then what's holding me back?"'

WOW! ....... just WOW!
I've always enjoyed when my daughter plays some of Eddie's vids on YouTube but have never looked his work up myself nor seen him live.
I bought this book purely because I'd had a laugh at some of his work and really did not have any thoughts on what to expect so to have found myself glued to it until the end was a delightful surprise.
I recommend this book to anyone who'd like to hear about how to keep a positive attitude at all times and hear a beautiful calm view on the people in our world.
For what it's worth I read or listen to a book every three days on average and I think this may only be the second time I've written a review and this for no other reason than I got so much joy out of the book.
I hope any who read this and decide to buy a copy enjoy it as much or even more than I did.
Regards,
Mark

It's like having your ears being covered in BEES
But in a nice way.
This is essentially a book of life musings, philosophy, and pure motivation masquerading as an autobiography, and one absolutely best enjoyed through Eddie's own slightly whimsical and non-linear style of storytelling. He claims, as a dyslexic, to think sideways rather than forwards, and absolutely represents that claim with frequent asides, footnotes, explanations, and extrapolations of his points that inform far more than the actual words of the book ever could. It's not the most direct or easy route from start to finish, and that is exactly the Eddie way.

Read delightfully by the author himself
Firstly, I hate books in which celeb bios have excessive footnotes but thankfully audio books cure this, they make way more sense being spoken aloud - this is how losing your train of thought and going off on a tangent should be. I definitely think you get more out of this title because of it.. Lots of amble ramblings not in the book.
Overall, I did find it a little long and probably a little bit more in-depth than I expected /wanted but I can't fault listening to his beautiful voice. He is so humble that he makes his amazing feats of multiple marathons seem normal, like anyone could decide tomorrow to do it. Not so, the secret ingredient really is determination and grit and not everyone has this in abundant qualities Like eddie does..
Just to let you know, I work for Audible, but the views expressed in this review are 100% my own.

have retuned the book, 5 hours of 14 hours in. By this mark, Eddie is in his early teens, selling ice cream, talking about his time in the Ists footballs team. For a person with such an amazing wit and powerful story, Eddie is in desperate need of an editor.

Wonderfully funny, tragic, hopeful and inspiring
I love Eddie Izzard, and if you too are a fan of his work and particularly his shows, you will not be disappointed by this audiobook. Being narrated by himself, Eddie owns what he reads and frequently engages you with extra commentary you wont find in the written book. This is partly because he is brave enough to tell you from the start that he is dyslexic. Yes, he stumbles over some bits, but this only draws you in further until you are almost vocally cheering him on and giving your smartphone (or favoured device) a big hug. Some parts are brutally sad, so be warned if you are listening to this book in public. But you will equally benefit from a tissue or three in your pocket for the absolutely hillarious jokes and anecdotes. In summary, get this audiobook.

a funny and touching tonic to hard times.
The audio book is the only way, in my opinion, to experience Eddie Izzard's autobiography. The scattergun approach to telling of his life story, pulling in footnotes and anecdotes from across all of time just makes sense when read by the man himself. there are also several extra asides that obviously come to Eddie in the moment and are not present in the written text. there are many instances of repetition in the book, which may be irritating for some but for fans of the surreal stories in Mr Izzard's stand up are par for the course. I thoroughly recommend this book it is a funny and touching account of one of the most persistent and resilient men in show business that has operated as a tonic to me, who needed a timely reminder of what perseverance and self belief can do.

Amazing ramblings
Most audiobooks are the narrator reading the book... forget it here, the audiobook is true Eddie he goes off on so many tangents not in the paperback.
Lots of proper laugh out loud moments, might not be to everyone's taste but it made a real change. I am not a fan of his stand up but thought I would give it a go and so pleased I did.
As Eddie said he dictated his thoughts to the lady who wrote the book and this was the first time he had read it (whist narrating) thus there are so many foot notes (really far more than the actual text) mental and so entertaining. Very British but also lots of explaining for our American Cousins.
Thanks Eddie wish there was more books like this.

Not finished, but loving it
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I always prefer hearing the original author read their own work, particularly when it's an autobiography. It just sounds right, somehow.
Never has that been more so than with Eddie Izzard's autobiography. If this was read by anyone else, it would not work, but any fan of Eddie's standup will love it.
Any additional comments?
If I had one criticism. it would be hat there are no downloadable copies of the pictures that would be found in the printed book, as Eddie sometimes refers to them. That said, there are so many extra bits that are not in the print version - off the cuff asides that he thinks of as he is reading his work, that make this a real gem.
Occasionally poignant, very often funny (I regularly catch myself suppressing a laugh on the commute to and from work as I listen), I can't recommend this highly enough.

I really wished for better
Caveat - First time i've left a review without completing the book. I think this is an honest and interesting memoir written and read with heart and warmth. However, i found myself feeling quite bored midway through. perhaps this reflects my hope for it/him to be 'funny' all the time, which is perhaps unrealistic. other memoirs have captivated me more, but probably worth a listen for die hard jazz chicken fans

Inspiring but hard work
Great insight into a remarkable guy, but his constant tangents made it tough listening at times, particularly in the first half of the book. Probably fine for fans of his meandering standup but infuriating for the casual listener.
