So versteht sich der Meisterbetrüger Krull als Künstler und bringt seine Bekenntnisse mit hoher literarischer Kunstfertigkeit vor. Mann hingegen empfand diebische Freude dabei, seinen Text als parodistische Autobiographie zu konzipieren und sich in der Figur des kriminellen Aufsteigers selbst zu porträtieren. Es handelt sich daher um einen Bekennertext mit doppeltem Boden: einerseits die fiktive Biografie eines verführerischen Verbrechers, andererseits eine kritische Selbstprüfung des verschmitzt resümierenden Autors.
