Der Autor:
Herman Melville (1819-1891) verbrachte viele Jahre seines Lebens auf dem Meer und fuhr als Matrose an Bord von Walfängern bis in die Südsee. Als Schriftsteller hielt er diese Erlebnisse später in Moby Dick und anderen Abenteuerromanen fest, verewigte aber ebenso seine ersten Arbeitserfahrungen in Kanzleien. Bartleby, die absurde Parabel auf die Grenzen des Menschseins in der modernen Welt, machte Melville zur Inspirationsquelle großer Autoren des 20. Jahrhunderts.
