Die Hauptfigur arbeitet als unauffälliger Büroangestellter und weigert sich eines Tages, der beruflichen Bitte ihres Chefs nachzukommen und zwar nachdrücklich und auf unbestimmte Zeit. Jedermann ist ratlos, aber Bartleby ist entschlossen, nur noch Tätigkeiten auszuführen, die er für wichtig hält, unabhängig von den Meinungen anderer. Sein rigoroses Verhalten, alles aus seiner Sicht belangloses nicht mehr auszuführen führt zu einer Verkettung seltsamster Handlungsweisen, bei welchen sich Bartlebys Arbeitskollegen und sein Chef nicht mehr so sicher sind, wer hier eigentlich noch alle Tassen in welchem Schrank hat.
Schließlich kündigt der Chef den Mietvertrag für die Büroräume seiner Firma und alle verlassen die Etage des Gebäudekomplexes - nur nicht Bartleby. Nun muss die Person oder Firma gefunden werden, welche die Verantwortung für das illegale Nutzen von eigentlich leer zu stehenden Büroräumen trägt. Leichter gesagt als getan.
