About this listen

In this definitive expose, Walkley-award winning journalist Debi Marshall turns her investigative blowtorch to the shocking Adelaide Family murders and to secrets long hidden in the City of Corpses.

This chilling account begins with the liberalisation of South Australia under the premiership of Don Dunstan and demands answers to decades-old questions. Who were the Family killers? Why are suppression orders still protecting suspects four decades later? Why do some of these serial killings remain unsolved? Only one suspect, Bevan Spencer Von Einem, has been charged and convicted.

With her combination of investigative skills and sensitivity, Marshall treads a harrowing path to find the truth, including confronting Von Einem in prison, pursuing sexual predators in Australia and overseas, taking a deep-dive into the murky world of paedophiles, challenging police and judiciary, and talking to victims and their families. The outcome is shocking and tragic.

Following broadcast of the Foxtel television and podcast series Debi Marshall Investigates Frozen Lies, numerous people came forward to courageously share new information with Marshall. Their stories are here. Banquet takes aim at the public service, wealthy professionals and the judiciary and for the first time reveals hitherto unpublished details of the Family. And it demands a Royal Commission to break the silence that keeps the truth hidden.

Amazing but devastating read, also one of the most comprehensive and through investigations I’ve read into this sickening case.
The amount of care and thought for the family’s affected by these sickos shown by Debi and her team is really great.

A terrible case, that has no triumphant ending. But, the book is amazing, well researched, and I commend the author for her work on the case.

This story is truly shattering. Debi Marshall, however, has treated this subject with deep empathy, and years of tenacious digging to get to the truth. This is one of those books that stays with you long after.

Like is not an appropriate response to this horrific, despicable and tragic true story (stories) very well written and researched .beggers belief that suppression orders still hold fast to potentially shedding some light(truths) to the depravity , abuse and murders that to this day are not solved. Why ? Why?!!! My heart goes out to all those who still suffer and bare the scars.Thank you for writing this book Debi,I commend your courage and doggedness in your efforts to expose the truth and bring some comfort to those who still bare the scars. Congratulations and thank you! Rosemary

The detail is great it is somewhat captivating if you can get past the constant mouth noises by the narrator.
Do yourself a favour and go and buy the book and just read it.

When I downloaded this book, I expected another true crime story to listen to while at work and doing chores around the house. Something to keep mind occupied.
What I didn't expect was to get so sucked in that I finished in two sittings. and that's only because I had to sleep in between.
This book is dark and disturbing, but Marshall is a beautiful writer, especially in the moments she describes her own experiences investigating the case. Of all true crime books I've read/listened to, Banquet is also the most humanising of the victims and their families. More than once I was close to tears listening to the impact these crimes on the loved ones left behind.
I truly hope that this book and other media that went along with it help to bring justice to the young men killed and abused by The Family.

Did not expect to get so sucked in!

Debi Marshall has presented the facts that can be told about Adelaide's grim past in a thorough, engaging and empathetic account. I have great respect for her efforts in lifting some of the suppression orders and for having the determination and dedication in trying to bring to light the horrors and resulting stain that remains on Adelaide's justice system. Her narration is excellent and, while it's sometimes hard to listen to, she reminds the reader of the hell the victims and their families have to live with everyday. An important book and one that I hope eventually shines the light on the truth.
